Big Brake Kit Upgrades.. Need help deciding..

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I already have drilled rotors & Hawk HPS pads with the stock HP2 calipers. They don't cut it. And my Z has Skyline GTR brakes (13"+ rotors and 4 piston calipers w Ceramic pads) so it set the bar a bit high for "good brakes". Had my heart set on the 6 piston Porsche kit from ECS cause it's simply gorgeous.. But after printing the fitment template, it doesn't fit behind either set of 18s I have.. So I need other ideas. My credentials are a minimum of 4 pistons, hopefully 14" rotors, but as close as possible, and a reputable brand. I liked that the Porsche kit from ECS took regular Porsche pads. So there were many pad options and they are readily available from any source.. That was also a big plus in case "Brand X" stops making their A6 brake kit and I am left without brake pads.. And the 4 piston kit from ECS is still a stock size rotor. No way I am spending all that money and still having a stock size rotor. Minimum is 13", but as close to 14" as possible...

Give me what ever feedback on brake kits you can. So far, I am leaning towards the 14" Rotora kit as long as it will fit. I have heard some people were not happy with StopTech, and Ksport. Plus Ksport is a brand I have not really heard of. This is brakes, so I want something with a good history.

So what to you guys recommend? Rotora, StopTech, Ksport, ECS 4 piston? Who has what & what do you think?

Thanks all. Any thoughts are welcome...

Spacers aren't an option. Offsets of my wheels put both sets of wheels right at the edge of wheel well. One is 8" with a, et30, and the other is 8.5" with an et35. Gives both sets a great stance. But that also means I do have good spoke clearance on them. The problem I ran into with the 6 piston ECS kit was actually on the radius/diameter. I don't know what 18" wheel they say it will fit in, but I was about 3/8"-1/2" short of clearance in that dimension.

Oh, and 2 piece rotors very much preferred for weight savings...

Did you seriously just list Ksport? I have no idea how you could want the Porsche brake kit and then consider the Ksport crap.

Yeah, I have met 2 B5 owners that said they were very disappointed with Stoptech.. They are not even really on my list of options.. I liked what I saw from Rotora. They have a good rep in the JDM crowd. Would love to hear how they stop in a proper German car that actually has more weight than a shopping cart...

I've dealt with Rotora on my past cars and loved them. Same with the Brembo Big brake kits. Did you consider the RS6 brakes?

No, but I would love to! Never seen them used on ebay or anything and I imagine they would cost a few major organs from the dealer.. Whats the cost like on them?

I completely missed that man, I'm a retard, sorry bout that. Seriously though, Ksport sux hard. I had some coilovers from them years ago that were absolute shit. Fell apart in no time. I got them for like $300 brand new back then, and that is the only reason I tried them.

I remember seeing a set of RS6 brakes going on the forums for $1200ish. If I remember correctly they don't have that great of an advantage over a properly set up HP2 brake system. You might want to research 4.2 stopping distance, and RS6 stopping distance.

Re: Big Brake Kit Upgrades.. Need help deciding..

Well the RS6 setup would just be extra sexy cause its an OEM retro fit.. And $1200 is perfectly fine. But if its not that much better than HP2 it negates why I am doing the upgrade. Sure I wanna see a huge brake setup thru my wheels, but I have never prioritized show over go (or stop in this case) and I am not gonna start. If its worth it & I can find em, cool. If not, I would raher a new setup over used anyways..

Don't sweat not seeing the other thing in my post... Its 330 am here, so I assume 230 am where you are.. lol

i have the rs6 kit and its great compare to s6 stock brakes. front rotors are 365 so thats 14.3 inch. I love it. its great for high speed stoping and i never seen it fade ( didnt drive the car on the track) also i will be swithching the pads soon so i'm expecting even furthere improvement.

Where did you find the calipers or the kit and for how much? I also hear the B7 RS4 is the same caliper..

Oh, and I will also take any recommendations on rear upgrades too since our OEM ones are as small as a bottle cap.. 034 has an adapter to put 300mm B7 S4 rotors in the back for the B5, anyone know if it will fit ours too?

Definitely following this thread for more info on the RS6 brakes ;)

The S6 brakes suck pretty bad on heavy stops (when those stupid polos/fiats/etc jump into the left lane in front of me).

I am surprised no one tossed Stasis into the mix. One of the Stage III allroad owners on AW (gragravar) has the 4-piston 13" setup and raves about them (and I read a post from someone doing a ride along that said their eyeballs almost popped loose stopping so hard). Gragravar also built a 11.7" rear setup from Stasis.

Re: Big Brake Kit Upgrades.. Need help deciding..

I bought the kit used for the shop that did an upgrade for a customer with the rs6 so they sold me the kit. I rebuild the calipers with new seals and boots. also powdercoated it. RS6 RS4 and i think R8 use same 8-piston calipers. Whats good about RS6 Calipers is that it has a munting bracket that can be removed and swaped for any custom made so i you can make it fit any car. The rotors are drilled and vented 365mm in diameter with aluminum hats and designed to keep the heat away from the wheel bearings. The parts for the kit are expencive thats why not so many people get the kit. The rotors cost around $800 for the pair and $350 for the brake pads plus $500 for the calipers also dont forget the brakelines. I might have front kit for sale soon, but i dont have any details so far. Im also working on getting the rear rs6 brake kit, because thats the only kit that can posibly fit my car and i wouldnt loose the handbrake. I will keep you posted if there is anything i find.
here are some pics of the kit i got.

Oh, and will that kit clear 18" wheels? Do you have a template or specs to check clearance? If anything, print the template ECS gives for their 6 pot kit and tell me what it isin comparison. That one would not fit for some reason, but I know the RS6 comes with 18s stock, so hopefully it will fit..

Scot W mentioned the Alcons, which I have heard nothing but great stuff on. There's a kit for sale in the classifieds that's top of the line (6pot, 370mm rotors ), brand new, with warranty, and pretty discounted. The guy selling was a Stasis employee.

    http://www.audizine.com/classifieds/...ct=2672&cat=49

The item no. for the B5 kit and the A6 kit is the same btw, so I presume it will work.
