    2001 S4 oil leak

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey everyone I have a 2001 S4 and I have an oil leak. I think it's the valve cover gasket on the driver side. Im going to change it this weekend, but I just wanted to know is there anything else I need to replace, like timing tensioner seal, suction pump etc? I know it's a newbie question but I just want to make sure I have all the parts before I start the job. It doesn't look like the tensioner seals are leaking, but I wanted to know if its a good idea to replace while I have the car apart. Any help would be great.
    Thanks

    Re: 2001 S4 oil leak

jsut do all the seals to get it over with

    4x cam seals
    2x cam plugs
    vavle cover
    front crank seal,
    upper and lower oil pan
    rear main seal
    timing belt components

in fact just pull the engine out while your at it, if you plan on keeping the car learning to pull the engine, by yourself, in less than 5 hours is essential, believe in 1 year of ownership, i have pulled the engine 3 times and had to drop it down 2x more.

just do it now and get it over with :)

and you better replace those turbos or else the valve cover gaskets wont work right

Hey man, welcome to Audizine. Be patient. someone will answer your question for you without being a smart a$$. It drives me crazy seeing how people treat new users. Its a wonder anyone joins az anymore. We are not all like that, just keep that in mind.

If I knew the answer to your question I would answer it. But Im not sure about what to replace. The one thing I do know is audi's are known to leak oil but you already have experienced that. lol

    Re: 2001 S4 oil leak

Thanks for not being a moron like goohead. I thought it was a pretty decent question, should I just go ahead and change those seals or leave them alone since they aren't leaking? Anyway and real help is appreciated. Thanks

    Re: 2001 S4 oil leak

For the valve cover gasket, I would change the cam chain tensioner at the same time. The front cam seals, cam plugs, and front crank seal you’re not going to be able to do unless the car is in the service position (raised on jackstands in front with bumper and radiator housing off). If you want to change front cam seals, cam plugs, and front crank seal at the same time as the valve cover gasket and your timing belt hasn’t been changed yet and you have something like 50k miles, then I would say do timing belt change and change everything found in this kit:

    http://blauparts.com/proddetail.asp?prod=GF21002

for the cam chain tensioner, you need this tool:

    http://blauparts.com/proddetail.asp?prod=N1A1016

But you can just change the valve cover gasket and cam chain tensioner and you should be good. Check your cam plugs located on the back of the heads. They are these rubber looking plug things sticking off the back of the back. Just make sure they aren’t leaking oil too before you start your maintenance.

    Re: 2001 S4 oil leak

I took a closer look at the car today, and it looks like just the driver side valve cover gasket is leaking. The cam plugs look good, as do the timing tensioner seals. I was just wondering since I will have the valve cover off if I should just do the timing tensioner seal as well. I'm going to do both valve cover gaskets since there is a little dampness starting on the passenger side. Everything else looks good. The only other thing I was thinking about changing was the suction jet pump, since I have heard that the failure of these can cause seals to blow and cause oil leaks. What do you think. Thanks again for all the help.

If you doing mind taking it apart again to re-do, then just fix what's broken. Though the other side will invariably go, as will the cam tensioner seals. Parts are pretty cheap, so if you're good with a wrench, i'd replace 'em all.

Thanks. Im planning on doing the valve cover gaskets on both sides, since the passenger side is showing some signs of seepage. Im probably going to do the cam tensioner seals as well depending on how they look. But for sure Im going to do both valve covers. And possibly the suction pump, since this might be the reason that I have the valve cover leak in the first place. I will test the pump first to see if it needs to be replaced.
Thanks a lot for the advice.

Bro, don't do the valve cover gaskets and not do the cam tensioner seals. When they start leaking in 6 months you have to do the same job all over again and then some, AND buy new valve cover gaskets.

You're in there, just replace the cam tensioner seals.
