    amen! been waiting for weeks for that Paris Preview: Audi S4 headline!

    have to say i'm relieved at how beatufiul the car looks and the coming s-tronic gearbox.

    yea that would have been sick, but they are probably trying to distance themselves from BMW and the 335i (V6 twin turbo). But who knows?

    I will say it is interesting how they decided to use a supercharger on the s4, but a twin turbo setup on the RS6 (and maybe even the new RS4).

    Its about time. I cant wait for this thing to come out. I wonder if I should get on a waiting list or something? Id hate to have to wait 8 months like some people had to with the S5.

    Like: front end styling, rear end styling (on sedan only), LED tails, rear valence (although it could've had a bit more detail), dual exhaust, seats (hope they make it into U.S. spec cars), ergonomic placement of the controls in the middle console.
    Don't like: rear end styling (on avant), ride height (maybe it'll sit lower on sport setting?), wheels (on the red sedan), the generic "empty" look of the control panel right below the vents, the shape and chrome surrounds of the main vents, same steering wheel as the B7 (not that it's bad, but wtf?).

    However, as competition for BMW it doesn't hit the mark.
    The 335i has been out for 2 years and achieves those accel numbers, yet the price for it is comparable to the 3.2 A4.
    Unless Audi plans to seriously reduce the S4 price, the S4 will cost more because it looks better, not because it performs better for the money.

    Also, the "new" freshened styling of the 3 series really improves the looks nicely. The front end is more cohesive with proper BMW "nostrils", and the rear end looks much better than the awkward angles of the rear lights from the 06-08 3 series.

    The new S4 will probably be a better handler than the previous one, but it's overall performance won't change much.

    it's just as i expected it would be, similar to the S-Line exepted for the rear valance and twin exhaust
    but i like it sooo much, planning on getting those LED tails

    Performance is much more than acceleration and Audi is a better overall performer and a more complete package. The new S4 offers newer technologies not even available on the 3er i.e. the seven speed dual-clutch S-tronic, adaptive ride control and more with a better fuel economy from the same displacement engine (I know, it's not an economy car, but still 24mpg average is impressive for a car of this calibre). Although design is subjective, the S4 has a definitely much better looking and luxurious interior than the spartan bimmer and Audi's electronics including the B&O system blow BMW's away. Without a question, it will definitely be more exclusive than the 3er and that unfortunately costs money. I've always been a BMW guy (see my sig), but as much as I try, I just can't get past the looks of the E90 and rest of the highly-criticized BMW lineup.

    No S4 avant = No sale

    The US didn't get the C6 avant in 4.2, allroad, or S6 trim.
    Now we won't get the B8 avant in 3.2 or S4 trim.
    The only avants left for US buyers appear to be base models.

    Why is AoA dropping all the good avants?

    ^ sales figures. americans never bought the euro wagons in volume, especially the maunal or performance minded versions, so AoA only plans to offer Avants in base models with automatic trannys.

    They probably used a SC b/c current owners are so used to the 4.2L V8's instant torque. Using a Twin Turbo would give too much lag (granted tiny ones like the 335 have little).

    I'm not a BMW fanboy but I do want to correct you by quoting that BMW has never made a car with V configuration in a 6 cylinder format. They only use 'Inline' or 'straight' in a 6 cylinder engine. :). Here's a article explaining it in detail

    I'm not a fan of the styling nearly as much as I was with the B6&7. I don't like the interior as much either...Looks as though Mercedes had a go at it. I like the firm interior look like in the B6&7's as well. Now as for the engine, I am excited to see how it racks up. The tuning potential for theis powerplant is much greater than the previous S4's 4.2. We shall see, maybe once they start hitting the road they will grow on me looks wise.

    i gotta be honest with the audi design man~
    i think b7 avant's rear looks much better than b8's.
    But, b8's front is killing~
    However, as a whole, if i'm to choose between b7 and b8 avant, b7 all the way.

    is this supposed to compete with an m3 or are they reserving the RS4 for that?

    if so, this is a direct 335 competitor, i drove a 335 and its blew me away because of how fast it was

    S4 is supposed to compete with 335, RS4 with M3...

    however, the line is a little blurry since in some tests the 3.2L A4 outperformed the 335 (some magazine comparo), and it certainly seems like the S4 should have a decent advantage in power (35 hp or so). can't wait to get my hands on a new S4 and see what's up.

    Yawn... So it lost 7 hp from the old 4.2? WTF! I'm surprised Audi made this move. I was expecting upwards of 360+. Its supper sexy but needs a little more ooomph. I'll still take it over the Bimmer

    The point is that the S/C V6 will create 324Lb. Ft. of torque (22 more than the V8) and will have that torque available as soon as 2500 rpm. The V8 didn't see peak torque until 3500 rpm. In addition to this, the peak torque on the S/C V6 will stay maxed from 2500 - 4850 rpms.

    This lower HP setup will still get the manual based S4 to 60 in 5.0 seconds flat, which is faster than the outgoing V8 model.

    Finally, the combined MPG being 29.1 is 7 MPG higher than the outgoing V8 car.

    So, it's got more torque, it's faster and it uses 27% less fuel than the V8.

    Where did the old or new V6 A4 ever 'outperform' the 335?

    The new V6 A4 is a good deal quicker than the B7 version, but it's nowhere near the 335i.
    The price of the V6 A4 is in line with the 335i, but you have to pay MORE for the S4 to compete with the 335i.

    The new S4 should have a numbers advantage, but it will also have a weight disadvantage.
    The good thing is that the new S4 has a SC, which tends to produce excellent torque, and lower in the rev range.

    Nice MPG, if it lives up to it's advertising.
    The 0-60 puts it on par with the 335, but at a higher cost.
    However, what happens after 60mph?
    What's the 0-100? That lower HP is gonna hurt.
    This trend to more diesel like torque curves doesn't fill me with happiness, not in "sport" sedans and cars that are supposed to REV and be driven.

    Isn't it a little unfair to compare a Quattro to a RWD as far as pricing and weight goes?

    Don't know about outperforming the 335i but on this particular track the A4 3.2 was basically even with 335i coupe and the same as the 4 door. #143, 152 and 153.

    i know that sounded really convincing right? haha. sorry, i couldn't remember the magazine. i think it was car and driver did a comparo of 335i and the new a4. the 335i killed in most things, but i think it was the slalom course where the a4 had a better time. i was trying to find an online version of the article, but so far unsuccessful.

    i'm def not saying the v6 can hang completely, just that the lines of competition are blurry since the v6 a4 would probably have a huge advantage over a 328 and on paper it seems the new S4 should more than hold its own against a 335.

    a few mags have pointed out areas it's better...better slalom, better lateral accel...but I wouldn't say overall better performer.

    Nice MPG, if it lives up to it's advertising.
    The 0-60 puts it on par with the 335, but at a higher cost.
    However, what happens after 60mph?
    What's the 0-100? That lower HP is gonna hurt.
    This trend to more diesel like torque curves doesn't fill me with happiness, not in "sport" sedans and cars that are supposed to REV and be driven.

    The Supercharged setup will make more torque than the V8 and it will do it earlier and will do it further into the gear. That's a faster car.

    As for the "diesel like torque". Yes it will have plenty of torque. This does not mean it will stop revving at 5000 rpms. It's a gasoline 3.0L V6. It will redline at 7000 rpms.

    Here's a example of the "detuned" version of the S4 motor that will debut in the 2009 A6. You can see the HP/TQ curves plotted. Peak numbers are 290HP/420Nm(or 309LbFt.). You will also see that it revvs high and will make peak HP at the top of the gear.
