Alternator crapped out!

Me and some of the guys were heading up to the meet and my car pretty much died on me. Looks like I'll need a new alternator. Anyone know where I could source a new or used alternator other than the stealership? I don't want to spend more than I have to. Thx again for the guys that stuck around and helped me;) I would've been stranded for sure.

Umm i would def suggest a new alternator. But ya i think anyplace like what mofsteel recommended would be good. Anyplace other than the dealership pretty much. Did you check if it was covered under your warranty bro?

Or NAPA. Some NAPA's have powder coated cages, yo!

But really, just go to any auto parts store, they'll have it. And usually it's a lifetime warranty against defects. PS, NAPA's usually NEVER cheaper but they always have the part.

Hey, I have a 1999 A6 2.8 v6 q that needs a new alternator. I was looking for anyone that could help. How hard was it to replace? Do you have to take the front bumper and core support out? I'm looking for any help..

you have to remove the support.. its not that hard.. takes a while though.

here is a diy that that explains how to remove the alternator- its actually for the thermostat, but it will work, you can just skip the steps that remove the intake mani and no need for taking off the coolant lines.

Don't even take out the support or anything. Remove the coolant hose put something over the end so you don't spill G12 everywhere, then remove the bolts off the alternator and for the bottom long bolt remove the fan to slide it out. Took me about 1 hour total on my B5. Bought mine at AutoZone for $145 and lifetime warranty. Make sure you know wether you have a Valeo or Bosch and if it's a 120 or 90 amp before you buy one.
