    Will this Navigation unit work in my 01?

    Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    I don't think its the RNS-E that I see posts about. I want to know if its the same wire harness, for a plug & play install. And also if it will physically fit, meaning dash opening. And will it work with my Phatnoise

    Thanks gents

    This one's the RNS-D, which is CD-based. Multiple CD's are required to cover all US areas. The RNS-E is DVD-based, with one DVD disc to cover all North America. See http://www.navplus.us/forums/

    Re: Will this Navigation unit work in my 01?

    Yes on fitment, Endee. Re "plug and play" I guess that's a matter of interpretation. For some people it may be -- there's a great how to on link I posted re the E type and D is very similar. E also has larger screen (in same size housing) -- next generation.

    Re: Will this Navigation unit work in my 01?

    Awesome. I will look over that post and the nav forums later. I am leaning towards the D since its way cheaper than the E. Nav is not even that big of a concern for me, I have Nav built into my phone & it works perfect. I mainly just want to modernize the look of my interior and get the screen in there..

    Does the D support bluetooth as well? And is it also PhatNoise compat? Another thing, sound wise, does it also have the built in hidden EQ? That made a huge difference when I changed the settings in my current one...

    Re: Will this Navigation unit work in my 01?

    I believe the Phatnoise is addressed (a yes for E anyway) and I thought it used same Bose radio/amp -- but I'm not certain. It also connects up with bundles behind instrument panel and presumably that means the steering wheel stays in play as well. The DIY with pictures is pretty good.

    Your music questions are exactly the ones I also want to know about and I didn't research very far except to see that this is great alternative to Garmin/TomTom approach. I may be taking new job where I'll need Nav and want top notch sounds.

    We can count on you to tell us, right?

    Big difference. I was actually going to install a 10in sub. But didn't have time to do it. After listening to it I'm not sure if I need it now :)

    Plus the Z3 has a built in hard drive you can rip music too.

    volume to increase or decrease; pre-scan to save and move to next.
    8 digits:
    1 = back low bass
    2= back upper bass
    3= back lower treble
    4 = back upper range
    5 = front low bass
    etc.

    Next comes the incredibly wide range of settings preferred. Any support for 75566556?

    Re: Will this Navigation unit work in my 01?

    yeah -- old age creeping in -- I meant what you said.

    I use 75566556 b/c front needs a tad extra bass more than rear does (but I also set fade toward rear a bit); or at least that's what I'm doing now. Sometimes 7 in back bass as well and I've sometimes lowered "upper bass" to 4; sometimes tweak with treble cont'l on dash + a bit. Usually set for classic rock; jazz or symphony (longer trips) I flatten out more.

    Re: Will this Navigation unit work in my 01?

    I went a little more dynamic on mine. Also kept rear treble lower than front to help sound stage. Just play with it and find what you like. I guarantee you will like it better with any adjustments.. It was enough to pretty much talk me out of installing a 10" sub and amp I already have sitting in my garage..

    Back to topic though, does anyone know if the RNS units also have the hidden internal EQ?

    Re: Will this Navigation unit work in my 01?

    I believe only reference was to 3 range control which I assume is same as front of symphony as opposed to EQ component. I'm going to check out a local auto-electronics place this weekend (Samm Sound -- I think it's a chain boutique, not sure), see what their staff knows. Pricey place for all sorts of neat radar, bluetooth, nav, audio stuff.

    turn off radio; hold down #5, keep it held down while turning on power -- you'll see the 8 digits and then proceed.

    Hey Endee - check out Pioneer 700 series NAV and Audio. EQ has 16 cuts to it (as opposed to our 4). Serves as pre-amp to Bose speakers' amps. Can also get kits for steering wheel cont'ls. SDs for loading music, MP3 jack, CD, AM/FM, bluetooth, very nice resolution screen (better than D3). Local boutique does it installed with all the extra kits req'd for A6 including 2 kits for our steering wheel, with tax, for $1500. It's a recent release product.

    I don't know. I have an 02 A6. Not sure if that matters or not. It just says Symphony on it.

    I'm not that unhappy with the Symphony, so if I change to anything it will only be another OEM piece so the it still looks stock. I spent a few years in the car audio business a while back & had some pretty serious systems then. Was even sponsored by Kicker with one car. Just really out grew that. As long as it sounds decent I am happy. I have a 10" sub with an amp and enclosure that I decided not to put in cause the Symphony was good enough.. So it will either be RNS or just what I got..

    Re: Will this Navigation unit work in my 01?

    I like Symphony fine as well, and as you know "management" of speakers is engineered for the car by Bose so we need to tread carefully with changes to amps, speakers. (I even go back to when there weren't amps for each speaker.) But anyway, either with RNS or Pioneer, it "replaces" Symphony by serving as pre-amp as I understand it. Pioneer 700 seems superior to RNS in terms of features -- from screen to sound, SD card, etc. (Who really makes RNS?)

    Problem I see is that in either case we're locating Nav where stereo cont'ls go and that's pretty far down the console for Nav (esp with bifocals, but we won't go there). C5 design is tough for in-dash since vents are where they are -- not at all like current model where Nav is up top where it should be. I'm thinking Garmin at corner of dash, driver side the more I investigate. Let's face it, car is 9 yrs old and only so much you can do with lipstick....

    LMFAO!! Haha... Honestly, the nav I have on my phone is almost flawless. I really like it. I am mainly looking into the RNS for the screen and an updated look. Another reason I would not go aftermarket is because I totally LOVE PhatNoise and thats only and Audi thing.. Speaker wise, I am going to do the Audax upgrade.

    Please excuse my ignorance, but what is PhatNoise? I did hear of it before but have NO idea what it is.

    PhatNoise is one of the best inventions since birth control.. It hooks up to an OEM Audi radio in replacement of the stock cd changer. It is a box with a removable cartridge (that resembles an Atari game) to load up 20 GB of music. Larger cartriges are available, up to 120 GB. Then you can have all those MP3s controlled with your OEM radio, including steering wheel controls. It allows you to browse by artist, playlist, genre and a few others. And its voice prompted, so it will actually say "Now browsing artist. The current artist is _____".. And you never have to have the ipod wire dangling, or remember to charge it, etc.. Good stuff.

    So I gather you're mostly looking for the screen to use Phatnoise software. How do you use Phatnoise with our current C5 Symphony set-up???

    Also: See GROUP BUY REQUESTS thread.

    Re: Will this Navigation unit work in my 01?

    Found out my PhatNoise will work with both RNS units. It works great now with the symphony unit too. The preset buttons take on different roles, the rest is done with the track knob and track buttons. Preset 4 puts you in "Browse by artist" mode, alphabetically. Preset 3 is Genre, Preset 2 is Playlist. The others do stuff too but I forget off hand what... Its an awesome unit to say the least.. I love it..

    Got it like a year ago, so I don't remember off hand. Not much though. $300-$400 total. You will need the basic kit- PhatBox, cartridge, software, USB docking station - as well as the A6 specific adapter cable. Got it on ebay.
