    Stupid Internal Wastegate

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am now in the market for a new 71R eliminator. I installed this turbo months ago. It worked great for a day. Since that day i haven't been able to boost over say 14lbs.

    - I intially thought that I had a boost leak. not so much
    - I then suspected that it might have been my EBC. not so much
    - So I unplugged the wastegate and still only got 14lbs of boost. winner

So based on the gathered information and my non professional skill level, I think that my internal wastegate is shit !

    Re: Stupid Internal Wastegate

That doesnt mean your turbo is shot. Hook an air compressor line to the wastegate, turn the regulator down to 20psi and see if you can hear the wastegate opening when the pressure hits it

I shot air into it and i could hear it open and close. Im not sure what psi it was at though, my friend didnt have a pressure regulator on his pump.

    Re: Stupid Internal Wastegate

What is the p/n on your wastegate actuator? I wonder what spring is in that actuator. My GT2871R is set to 11psi.

When you disconnect the actuator can you move the arm freely?

Is the actuator rod fairly snug with the wastegate arm? If that is loose you'll be leaking and won't be able to boost above a certain amount.

Sounds like you need to adjust the tension on the wastegate rod so that it'll take more pressure to swing it open.

    Re: Stupid Internal Wastegate

How did you confirm you don't have a boost leak?

With the wastegate disconnected, you should be making crazy boost unless you have a lot of backpressure, a charge system leak, or possibly a bad turbo.
The only ways the internal wastegate could be causing a low boost scenario is if the spring is too weak (probably not the case) or if the flapper valve isn't seated correctly or if the actuator is binding and not returning to a fully closed state.

    Re: Stupid Internal Wastegate

Im not sure what the part # is. I forgot to add that I build boost really slow. The EBC is working properly. I even tried this with a Forge MBC. Same end result

The rod tension is all the way tight. I really dont know what else it can be. My IE block off plate will be here by thursday and Ill remove all of that vac line crap as a last resort before pulling the turbo.

    Re: Stupid Internal Wastegate

If you can reach it, disconnect the rod and see if the valve moves freely on the exhaust housing. If it's binding or doesn't feel like it will close all the way, you may have to pull the turbo to resolve.

Eliminator comes with a 1.0 bar wastegate spring (14psi). I find it best to use a pump to adjust the manual boost controller.

A bulb pump from a blood pressure cuff works great, along with your boost gauge.

Yah Im getting around 14 psi at best. Even when I plugged in a MBC I still got 14psi. Im kinda at wits end because I dont know what else the problem could be.

If the internal wastegate is 1 bar, there has to be a problem somewhere else right ?

I followed the boost leak test thing on A4Mods and couldnt find a leak

    Re: Stupid Internal Wastegate

The leak may not be at the intake track, it could be at the turbo or the MBC itself, the easiest way to check the MBC is to connect the outgoing end to the boost gauge and connect the incoming to a air pressure source, you just do not want it to be to much greater than 30 psi or so, this will let you know how much air pressure the MBC is letting through.

    Re: Stupid Internal Wastegate

welding it shut would still require having the turbo come off.

    - I really hate not being able to figure out whats wrong with my car.

    Re: Stupid Internal Wastegate

man that sucks.... cuz you can't get that back turbo bolt off with it on the car can you? (can't remember for sure, i just know that I bolted my turbo to my manifold FIRST then put it all in)

either way that sucks man.. time to go bigger!

not gonna go bigger, prolly just replace it.

    - does anyone know what could cause your boost to build slowly ?
