mild trembling/shaking from the steering wheel?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
In this afternoon, I was driving on a highway, took my 2.0T to around 110-120km/h. It was actually a cold day, but no rains on the pavement.

I didn't feel the steering wheel trembling on the way to another city. But on the return trip(I used the same highway), around the same speed, I felt the steering wheel trembling a bit. And when I released my both hands to observe this mild movement, I could see the steering wheel was kinda shaking in a mild rapid rhythm.

Could this be possibly caused by the profile of the pavement(not very smooth, or because one side of the pavement was higher than the other side)??
Or maybe it was because of the fact that I put it in 6th, and was running with low rpm's?
I'll give it another run tomorrow. This was just the feedback I got from the car today.

If any of you had encountered a similar situation, please share it with me : )

    many thanks in advance!

i have a slight vibration too. its off and on. i attribute that to the rpms though. could be wrong. the only time i had those vibrations in my old car (civic) was when the breaks were going bad. =T

Might have thrown a weight at some point in the trip?

    Agorich:
It didn't happen while breaking. That'd only happen to cars that have worn out brakes I suppose.

hmmm, by "thrown a weight at some point", you mean "pedal to the floor" ?? if that's what you're suggesting, then it could be the reason..?

    thanks for the inputs guys!

he means you could have lost a stick on wheel weight causing imbalance in a wheel...or I was going to suggest you may have a slight bend in a wheel.

OP: is the mild shaking constant at any speed, or it only happens above certain speed?

Could be they've repaved only one side of the highway. Did you feel anything through the pedals?

Re: mild trembling/shaking from the steering wheel?

i too have been experiencing this for months. appears to only happen between 55-65 mph. most notably at 60 mph. then tappering off until about 80 where things seem smooth again.

i have tried wheel balancing to no avail. very annoying. wonder if a wheel is out of round slightly...

Re: mild trembling/shaking from the steering wheel?

    to Aspw:
It happened only when I was driving around 110-120km/h.
I don't think there's anything wrong with the wheels, haven't drove it over potholes or bump the curve or anything like that.
That could've been a reason though! thanks man!

nope, not even the slightest shake from them pedals.

In regard to the pavement, the inner lanes are usually a bit higher than the outter, so when it rains, it could be drained easier.
So, I was guessing that could've been a part of this trembling.

I'm gonna take it for another highway run later today.
again, many thanks for the thought!

yeh, I guess i was running it around 63 mph? somewhere along the line.
It was kinda annoying to me..especially when you've just bought it for almost a week only?

The handling's superb in all ways to me thus far, aside from this.

sounds to me like an out of balance tire. Most likely in the front. You may want to go to a shop that can balance tires and have them check it out.
