Talking Installed Fogs on DTM, and JHM Short Throw

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just finished installing the Hella Xenon fogs and JHM short throw shifter in the beast! All in all, a 12 hour job with 2 people, but well worth it in the end! BTW, for anyone thinking about these installs, the JHM is easy, but be sure you're careful about your adjustments on the shifter, it's really easy to throw the gears off (first time I tried it I had no reverse, haha). The fog lights...well...make sure you know what you're doing, because it's a pain in the arse. Here's just a few pics of the fun...

Nice work. Do you have an up-close shot of the fogs and the surround (lights off)?

Impressive. But why not just have put the S6 LED's or something along those lines? More importantly though, you're the first person who hasnt scared me with the JHM install. Was finding the gear after installing really that straightforward for you?

The fogs were actually on in that pic, but the angle and gasrage lighting were weird and made it seem like they weren't. I definitely agree they look better on though and have been driving around with them on, haha.

I live in the Bay Area, so it get's really foggy here. I definitely looked into the S6 LEDs because I think they look great, but they are considered by Audi to be "running lights" and don't actually throw that much light out in front. Thus, wouldn't do me much good for the fog unfortunately. As far as the JHM, I really didn't have much problem with it at all. In the adjustment phase, you just have to go slow and tweak it little by little until you find that spot where all the gears are smooth. At first I had no reverese, so I moved the neutral more to the right, tried again and it was good, but first and second were notchy, so moved it back to the left a bit and bingo. It just takes some patience to find it, but it's really no problem at all.

once you have the JHM centered, there is only one bolt to mess with. go through your gears, then loosen the bolt and adjust it one way. It's either going to get better or worse. If it gets worse, adjust it the other way. Once you know which way does what , it really easy.

Ya, and it's a REALLY small adjustment, you don't want to go very far in any direction. 1-3 degrees of change make a big difference! JHM recommends 3 degrees right, 7 down and I'm probably running around 3 right, 5 down

This is the one thing that has held me back from getting the DTM front...until now.

Nice job! More daytime pictures would be great.

Which short shifter did you get - I think there are three choices. How do you like it vs. stock?

I went with the stock height and just normal short throw, rather than the "Extra" short throw. It's A LOT better than stock, faster and more solid, and I'm glad I went with the stock height because it's not more to get used to.

Those fogs look great. Regular length is better than a short length as you don't have to reach as far to shift gears.

Re: Installed Fogs on DTM, and JHM Short Throw

Could you get a closeup pic of a foglight/trimmed grille?

How did you actually mount the fogs? Pics?

Wired to headlight switch so it works like every other S4? Or did you install your own switch?

I've wanted to do this for a while, but with OEM fogs and modified grilles. It just seems like too much work with too little time to work on it.

Here's the link to all of the photos I took. I think there's a few in there of what you're looking for. I attached them to a small plastic ledge just above the grilles. I also used a metal brace piece to support the light a bit more, and it made it very sturdy. Take a look at the pics as there are some of these steps. The lights are wired in to the headlight wire, so they are on when the headlights are (just like stock). Tried to get them to stand alone with the reverse fog switch, but it was 12:30am and I just wanted to be done, haha. Anyways, take a look at the pics and let me know what you think. Like I said, I'll also have more pics on thrusday

Personally I think it looked better without the fogs.
The clipped fog grilles look cheap.
