To get CPO or not to get CPO

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am in the process of shopping for a B6 S4 with below 35,000 miles.

There is one at Byers Imports that has 32,659 miles for $28,183 that is a CPO car.

There are also plenty of other ones out there that are manual with less miles and a little bit cheaper like $26,000 I think.

My question is whether or not it is worth it to pay a premium for a used car in order to have the peace of mind about certain things.

I bought my jeep CPO and didn't have a problem that was actually covered though I did have some minor problems. So I'm not sure it is worth it.

Anyways what are your guys opinions on whether or not it is worth it.

You can definitely find a car that is not CPO that will be just as good. It is up to you wether the warranty is worth it. If you look in private classifieds like autotrader or whatever, you can find some good gems amongst all the crap.

Re: To get CPO or not to get CPO

Yeah I know that I can get some cars that are better deals that aren't CPOed. My questions is whether or not the warranty is worth it. I usually think the piece of mind is worth it but saving 3,000 makes it seem hardly worth it. Also CPOed cars are usually extremely clean otherwise they would not be CPOed by the dealership.

Re: To get CPO or not to get CPO

    I bought my 2001 1.8T Q with 80,000kms that was Audi certified.
I did however save about 3000 $ but not taking the warranty. After 3 years I probably put in 1500 in repairs(MAS,2 O2 sens, vac line, wheel bearings)These cars can be pricey so warranty is good...but for 3000$ ...the car has low miles,is well kept..save the dough.JMO

Re: To get CPO or not to get CPO

Thanks for the input. I'm thinking that if I can get one in good condition and save around 3,000 that it might be worth it. there should still be some powertrain warranty left on the car

Re: To get CPO or not to get CPO

I debated the same thing when I got my B6, but it really is a piece of mind to know that if something goes wrong, it will be covered during the CPO period. Coincidentally, I do have mine up for sale now. Here is a link.

The CPO warranty on this one runs until April 2010 and I too am in VA.

Re: To get CPO or not to get CPO

Too bad its an auto otherwise I would come give it a look although the one in Ohio is still a better deal. anyways I do agree that the piece of mind is nice but I'm wondering if there has even been any common problems that would be covered under the CPO.

I would check the prices on some warranty plans (warrantydirect.com is good, so is autowarrantybroker.com) and see what's cheapest.

I think the CPO is well worth it.

The repairs on the S4 can get really expensive even for little things

Re: To get CPO or not to get CPO

thanks for the info on the other warranty info from private dealers. The prices aren't bad and the lower the mileage I could find one for it would definitely become worth it at those prices.

IMHO, CPO is a 'must' for EUROPEANS.

Get the CPO or 3rd party extended warranty. As mentioned above, repairs on S4's are not cheap. Also, keep in mind if buying privately that CPO is not transferrable (unless the car was bought as a CPO prior to Aug. 2006 and there will be a $150 transfer fee).

Just remember to get an exclusionary warranty plan.

Re: To get CPO or not to get CPO

I went through the same process and ended up buying a lower mile vehicle and adding a third party warranty to cover the vehicle for an additional 5 years / 50k miles at around 49k miles which cost $3k with no deductible. I thought the CPO is based on the in service date vs. extended is from when you purchase it so I have more coverage.

Just had a window regulator and rear window switch / relay replaced replaced under warranty which would have cost me $600.

It is. Depending on what year the car is, you may or may not have more coverage. If you get a B7 CPO, you will have the remainder of the factory warranty. When that runs out, you will have an additional 2 years/50k. So even if you get a 05.5, the factory warranty will still be good until late 2009 and then CPO will be good until late 2011 (which is what mine is). If you get a CPO B6, then most the factory warranty is just about expired if not already. You will just get the extra 2 years/50k of the CPO.

The dealer's in Minn/Mich would take off approximately $1700 if you decline the CPO. Even if you decide not to keep it, It is nice to buy a car that has gone through the Audi 300 point inspection.

IMO, negotiate down the price of the car and keep the CPO.

CPO is a nice thing to have just in case. I'm pleased that my current car is a CPO. Takes a lot of worry out of it.
