I have the same thing on my stock bumper...mine are held on with zipties though...and I had mine powdercoated black....

my diamonds are larger than yours....I picked up mesh that was almost identical to my Rs4 brill....

BTW-your lower grills would contrast better is you had an Rs4 grill.....

    looks good!

Damn... That looks really good... Can't wait to see the RS4 grill to match it... Maybe use flat/satin paint instead of gloss to match the rest of the moldings?

It would be cheaper to get the grill with a WTB ad (Audizine or Fourtitude). Those things got pricey. I got mine for $115 off a WTB ad. You could always get one for cheaper.

And for the fmic, if you want one that can fit behind the stock bumper with no cutting you would have to go with Racetec. I also have one saved on my ebay favorites list that claims very little cutting. Link.

Re: custom rs4 mesh for lower grills

It just does not sit in a freindly position. There is a pretty snug spring rate and the bottom of the latch has a groove that uses the grill as support, as not to be pushed back into the engine bay due to the spring rate. Just want to give you a heads up before you find out the irritating way.

Re: custom rs4 mesh for lower grills

You could maybe just cut a hole at first (smaller than what it really is), then slowly snip away till you are able to have the bottom of the latch sit properly to the mesh. But you would need it to be at a flat angle, so maybe epoxy a flat metal wire/cable (durable enough to withstand the spring rate) at the place the latch is supposed to sit snug on the grill mesh. If you know how to use a solder iron, that would be even better.

Re: custom rs4 mesh for lower grills

k this whole project cost me around 35$ 20 for mesh, bought 15 for can of primer and two cans of glossblack. i got real lucky cuz the mesh you buy at homedepot is only 2' by 2' but i found an old table at my house that was made of the stuff and the main grill and lower middle grill are both around 32''...

the effort was time consuming.. you really gotta hack up your stock inserts and cut out all the fins in order to just have the plastic frame with clips.. then you gotta cut the mesh, use tin snips. and trim untill you think it fits perfect. then expoxy the outside, prime it and then paint it..

when your done the finished product is just as strong as the stock insert if not stronger :)

Re: custom rs4 mesh for lower grills

for those who want a cleaner front grill look without the realese pull sticking out from the rings, you can bend the realese pull lever downward toward the bumper and it would became a lever under the hood. you need to remove your front grill to do this. to open the hood, you just need to stick your hand under the hood and pull. you might need some adjustment for spacing by bending it more. i did this to my and it look a lot better with full mash grill. feel free to pm me if you need more instructions.

I think this is going to be the next project on my list. Anybody know how to remove the lower middle and driver side grille inserts? I got the passenger insert out easy, it just popped out. I couldn't seem to get the other two out. I didn't want to force it and end up breaking it. I've tried to do a bit of searching but couldn't find anything. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

A place between here and there

They pop out just like the other ones. The easier way to pop out the fog grill ones is to pull out on the inside (side that is next to the middle insert) side of the grill. The side of the grill to the outside of the vehicle is where it is locked in. The inside part has the part where the fog light insert has sort of like a clip (I think 2 of them) that pops out. And I found it easier to remove the middle insert by popping the hood, reaching down, and pushing it out from behind the bumper, in front of the radiator. With that said, I finished this mod a while back, due to this thread (I mentioned it a couple posts up). I used LLtek RS4 ABS plastic mesh.

    looks great!

if anyone try this I would recommend using truck bed liner instead of the powder coat. I had better luck with it. both look great though.
