I just put a southbend stage 2 clutch in my 2003 A4 Avant. Modds are in my sig. Been waiting on this whole breakin period. So this week i was well over 1,000miles, and got on it today and nothing. Clutch is slipping, why is this happening.

    Re: Stage 2 Southbend?

It is slipping because you most likely didn't break it in correct seeing that a SB stage 2 has kevlar on the disk and it needs to be heated up to set. 1000 miles doesn't mean much if you never really used the clutch which is why they recommend 500 stop/go traffic. Last time I had a kevlar clutch setup I was able to break it in 50 miles and did that by doing short low rpm 5th gear fwy pulls to heat the kevlar up and let it cool.

How do you know when it's broken in? And then the other day, I got up to like 14psi (oops!) and it slipped a little... is that bad?

Exactly how do you know if its broken in. Talked to AWE and they said it would have to be sent out to see whats wrong with it. There word against mine, I guess. But they were cool about it to me.

Guy drove it today and said it was fine. Then i asked him what RPM he got it up to and said 500rpm, and it shifted all gears and held. Told him he needs to get it up to atleast 3,000-5,000 rpm for full boost to kick in. He waslooking at me confused. I saidon highway at 80mph, the car runs at 3,800 rpms. and when i get on it to pass it's not holding.

You might want to contact the shop you bought it from or call up Southbend. This is one of the reason I dont suggest the stage 2 to my customers because it does use kevlar.

Interesting, I've been looking at South Bend, but stage 2 is lowest I can go as I'm making close to 300lbs already. Who else would be recommended?

Why does the stage 4 not have Kevlar on it?

Because it uses a medium metal on one side and organic on the other, that combo will hold more power. That same disk is used for the stage 3 for the lwfw with the HD pressure plate that has less clamping pressure vs the SS that comes with the stage 4.

    Re: Stage 2 Southbend?

its slipping because you didnt get a strong enough clutch for that vicious torque spike the k04 has. you should have gone stage four (OFE SS) or stage 5 FE SS

    Re: Stage 2 Southbend?

spoke with a tech at southbend this morning. He said " if i used the oem flywheel, and they didn't resurface is it could wear on the kevlar. as a result when it heats up it will slip till the two match up to each other" I asked do i need a new one and he said "NO" just have to wait right now i have 50% clutch till the two work out. So i guess i'll wait and see how it goes. Better be fixed before the Cliffs of Insanity!

    Re: Stage 2 Southbend?

Ahh damn that sucks, does anybody know what is the purpose of resurfacing the flywheel ? I'm probably ordering my new SB stage 1 clutch in the next week or so, and idk if I will need to resurface the stock flywheel or not. I hope I dont have to, cuz it'll probably be a PITA to get it done.

To remove any high spots so you end up with a pefectly flat surface.

So the difference between stage 3 and 4 is the SS vs HD pressure plate? Mike can you or anyone else knowledgeable elaborate more?
