I dropped my 97 a4 off at the dealership for a bad head gasket. Come to find out the cylinder head is cracked. They told me this rarely happens. Has anyone else had this problem. the total estimate price is $3500. The car is auto with 150k on it.

buy a new car, for 3500 you might as well just spend a few extra bucks and get another one..JMO

It has sentimental value to me if you know what I mean. I told the dealership to go ahead and fix it. I got a rebuilt head for a couple hundred bucks and did the timing belt job while they were in there. So I figured the car can go for quite some time now....knock on wood

damn.. You could've found plenty of capable guys that could have done that work for half that price if not more. Your not under warranty, imo you shouldnt be at the stealership, they rip people off.

Yeah I was looking. But no one around my area really works on audis. and i was getting fed up with the car just sitting around. I could have gotten a new one but the one I have is green and I have yet to see another green one where I live. But at least now since the top end is all rebuilt and timing belt job is done is should be running like a champ when I get it back next week sometime.

    Re: Cracked Cylinder Head

I haven't seen it happen, or heard of it happening on any German car yet. I haven't been working on them for long though.

... $3500 seems a bit steep. Dealer pricing is harsh, we just did a full head rebuild at work for a MK4 customer (snapped T-Belt) for less than half of that. New guides, and exh valves, T-belt, etc. Granted we did reuse the head itself, but you can get perfectly good used heads for <$400

I saw a few complete AEB heads for anywhere from 200-500 including shipping. I was looking for one to massage a bit. That, and loan it to a friend with a lotus exige (1.8 too) and a manifold flowbench.
