    Any way to read CELs?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Without a reader? I just got a CEL in my 08 A4 with 10k miles on it. My buddys Jeep can read a code by turning the key. Can we do anything like this?

You don't need Vag-Com to read a CEL. You need any OBDII scanner.

A Vag-Com will give you more information than a regular OBDII connection ever will. That means you alter everything with your car and you can read fault codes that do not result in a CEL.

You can take it to Autozone or Schucks they will normally read the code for free and tell you what it is. Or you can purchase an OBDII scanner from them and do it yourself.

Re: Any way to read CELs?

sorry I wasn't clear enough...I meant you need some type of vag or cable to retrieve codes...cant be read without. Its a rough group tonight haha

Also, OP...did you put gas and maybe didnt close your cap tight enough? I had a check engine once for that, that went away. Lastly, go to dealer regardless to see what that light was about, even though it went away, still good to know what it was

My '08 with under 10,000 miles has been getting a CEL on and off for the past month, it'd come on for approx. 100 miles, then go off for 100, and so on. I took it to the dealership yesterday and they replaced an oxygen sensor.

Re: Any way to read CELs?

yes, typically codes are stored on the ecu, I would just recommend going to dealer or finding someone with a real vag..I have heard stories of people using autozone scanners and getting a different type of code from what was actually occurring. Believe it or not!

Re: Any way to read CELs?

Also... make sure the autozone guy doesn't clear your codes... or don't let them cuz otherwise you lose whatever was stored and the dealer may not be able to determine the whole truth (not that I think they would know anything anyways without the TSBs they keep in their systems)
