Just got K04'd and have some questions.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Little back story on the car: its a 5.5 A4 Quattro, TestPipe, APR Chip, full britalman exhaust, power was good, especially on the top end, overall a nice improvement over stock. This was my setup before going with the K04 hybrid.

Few days ago i had the K04 installed and a highflow cat put in (coudn't deal w/ the loudness of TP) along with the updated software. The car seems to have more torque but I barely notice a difference. I remember when I went thru the same with my B5 1.8T and the difference was significant.

So what I would like to know is has anyone else had this experience, or something is wrong and should do some investigation.
I'd hate to think I spent all this money for what feels like 10-15hp gain.

    Thanks

which kit did you go with? Who did the tuning and did you do anything else with the turbo install, fuel injectors, fuel pump?

This is definitely something you shoudl discuss with the shop that did the work for you. I'm sure it wasn't cheap and they want you to be happy with it so they should be very helpful. Plus, they know the specifics of your car way better than anybody on here.

I think you need to get a fuel pump as well. That'll certainly help you notice a major difference.

I just did the software (APR) and KO4 (upgraded my K03 intersnals), no injectors or pump. I rather not say who did it just yet (great people, good service), I am not blaming them at all, will be going back to the shop saturday to try a few different settings. Until then I just wanted to see if this is normal without the additional upgrades, or I should look for a problem.

How much? You need fuel pump, injectors, and apr software is made for k03 not k04 that's why the gains are minimal

I paid under 2k for the Turbo Retrofit, HighFlow Cat, installation, and flash to KO4 software.

it seems like a patch and match way to do it but as long as it works thats great. I would say you should have waited on the new K04 kit to come out and you would have gotten all the other stuff - fuel pump, injectors, intercooler etc.... Good luck!

Dyno the car to see if you have decent numbers! Keep us posted.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but that would mean you don't have a true K04. I know the K04 is a bigger turbo, not by much, but still.

I would definitely take it back to the shop and it might be because the turbo itself is still the same size...?

Re: Just got K04'd and have some questions.

actually the housings are exactly the same, the only difference is the compressor wheel. The blades on a K04 are large surface area, its not all that much bigger of a turbo.

I actually am now, too. After further research it seems that the K04 is actually very different from the K03. Granted there are tons of different models of each.

From what I've found it seems as though the K04 is definitely not a direct bolt on. Which is at least partly due to the fact the DV is attached to the K03 while the DV is separate from the K04 and that other pipes/flanges just aren't the same.

The pictures out there make it look like the K04 is actually a bigger housing as well...not by much though.

Re: Just got K04'd and have some questions.

The K03 and K04 use the same housing. The K04 has a different compressor wheel for improved flow. The turbo's themselves are the same size. There are different variants of the K04 turbo for different applications, A4, TT, S4 ect.

A K04 is a very minor upgrade compared to a GTRS or similar BT.

Without appropriate fueling and tuning, a K04 upgrade does very little for performance.

So basically i need to buy a FSI HP fuel pump and injectors in order to have gains I can actually notice?

Anyone wants to get rid of their APR FSI fuel pump??

APR's FSI High Pressure Fuel Pump, S3 fuel injectors, and K04 software for an optimized K04 setup.

If the dyno below is your dyno then you actually dynod 274 CRANK hp and 318 Crank torque. The MAHA dyno as you can see lists the "pWheel" wheel horsepower and also calculates the "pEngine" or crank hp and also the "p corrected" the corrected hp at the crank given the ambients. The wheel hp was listed as 195whp.

its the software. i have the pump (this particular k04 doesn't require injectors, the s3 variant does). that's why apr took it off the market and is trying to release the s3 version instead, with injectors for this one.

Rather it's the turbo. That variant of the K04 is smaller than the S3 variant you are talking about and much more limited as far as power output. That's why the S3 variant needs or benefits from injectors. cheers! Mike

yes, but the software was a big problem and they couldn't figure it out. yes, the s3 is bigger, hence the higher hp numbers and the need for injectors

guess it was on cars that weren't quattro 6mt because i was holding 4 more psi at redline with my k04 kit than the k03 could and not a hiccup. I agree I wanted more power but I did back to back datalogs on the chipped k03 and their k04 and there was more air going in and more boost. the software seemed spot on. the requested and actual was better than i've seen in a bunch of programs out there that had been out for a couple years. i couldnt find a problem with the programming at all. it was a turbo limitation.
