Post Re: B6 on the track

Check out my HPDE & Autocross Weekend.

I have been autocrossing about a year now and last weekend was my first track event. Remaining as stock, the 1.8T really struggled on the straights versus other cars, but quattro made up for it to a certain extent in the turns. Many people at the event assumed that the A4 was chipped and I feel that an ECU upgrade would have helped out immensely. Surprisingly, my largest complaint was not the 1.8T's lack of power, but rather not having the ability to heel-and-toe considering the stock pedal arrangement. It's a major hindrance when you can not get the car in the proper gear during heavy braking.

In regards to beating "other uber high sports car" I would suggest rethinking what the entire purpose of a track event is. These events are for you to learn and improve at, they are not an all out race against everyone else out on the track. Having said that, there was an arrangement of different cars ranging from beaters to full race spec'ed cars. The vast majority of the cars were modified with a minority remaining as stock. In my particular session group, there were highly modified BMW E36's, Mustang's, Camaro's, a Cobra replica, stock Nissan 350Z roadster, stock BMW Z4 roadster, and so on. Remember that most organizations create the groups based on the driver's experience rather than the car's classification.

Regardless of everything I just said, I would recommend an HPDE (High Performance Drivers Education) event to anyone that wants to get a taste of how their car performs out on an actual race track. Having done one now, I know I will be attending another in the near future.

    Have fun and stay safe!

okay that means you have taking a stock b6 on a track wich is only 50% capable of what it actually can do. b6 stock is nothing only 50%. i would say a 100% b6 car is the one that APR and stasis made, there is a video you can see of it @ a4mods.com. that car has no one on zine drivin it. just see what little things can do to that car, and there you have it a 911 killer.

I am in no way bashing the A4 nor estimating what it can do if modified and driven properly. You asked for observations and I provided my observations with my stock A4.

This brings up a very legitimate point. The car's performance does matter considerably, but a driver's ability to harness the car's potential is even more important when looking at lap times.

I went to Road America in WI. I passed a Ferrari coming out of turn 3! He sucked at driving though. But we took my dad's S4 because I didn't have the turbo on yet

    Re: B6 on the track

I've done the Audi Club Driving School at Mid-Ohio for the past 6 years. This was my first time in the Advanced group. There were many cars in my group that were much faster than me in the straights. I was able to carry more speed through the turns and get back on them. I was able to catch up and pass several cars in my run group that had much more horsepower than I did.

The coilovers were superb. The brake setup I have (Stoptech 332mm BBK up front and B6 S4 rear brakes) allowed me to do hard late braking into each turn all day long without any fade. The K04 was quick to spool and pull me through the turns, but would run out of juice in the straights at WOT.

As it's been said before, you're not out there to race. You're out there for the driving experience and to improve your driving skills. Better driving skills will naturally lead to a faster car.
