The Audi A3 was brought into the project car family to be built as a strict show car only. We wanted it to have an aggressive stance and be stylish. At the same time, we wanted the car to have some power and handle well. With the addition of the JIC Coilovers and Neuspeed sway bars, we got handling. With the OCT ECU Flash, K&N Intake, Neuspeed pulley, and Agency Power exhaust, we had power. But when the opportunity came up to take this Project Car to the next level, we jumped on it.
One of our long time friends heads up the Sales department at Stasis Engineering. Stasis Engineering is based on the Infineon Raceway in Northern California. Besides selling custom Ohlins suspension kits and Alcon brakes specifically speced to their needs on Audi vehicles, Stasis also has competitive Audi racing vehicles runing their products in rigorous R&D. What Stasis has done to differentiate itself from the competition is develop performance packages that are targeted towards dealership upgrades and backing them with a full warranty. As Arizona's premier Stasis Engineering distributor and installer, we jumped on the chance to outfit our Audi A3 with the Stasis Engineering Turbo Upgrade Kit.
To focus on our reliability of this car, the Stasis Engineering turbo kit replaces the OEM K03 turbo assembly with a larger, more powerful turbo assembly derived from the K04 family of turbos. This turbo was selected by STaSIS for its ability to generate boost through a dynamic range of exhaust flow rates. This turbo was designed to create high flow rates at low engine RPM to simulate the OEM drivability, but to continue and deliver more power than stock throughout the entire RPM range. This is accomplished by utilizing unique design techniques developed by MAHLE with regards to turbine and compressor wheel design. This kit has done extensive testing by MAHLE and STASIS for reliability and engine durability with over 30,000 street driven miles and hours of racetrack development testing at out facility here in Infineon Raceway.
To further the performance of the kit, the injectors have been upgraded to give the car more fueling as necessary. Boost, fuel, and timing is controlled by GIAC ECU Programming. The diverter valve has been redesigned to accommodate the higher level of boost pressures associated with the kit. Various components of the valve have been upgraded over the stock assembly, increasing both durability and reliability. The diverter valve has also been relocated from the OEM location. Originally mounted on the compressor housing of the turbo charger, the OEM diverter valve was susceptible to extreme heat from the turbocharger. Our kit relocates the STaSIS upgraded diverter valve to the front of the engine just before the throttle body to remove it from the extreme heat of the turbocharger. This also adds a performance advantage maintaining charge pressure more uniformly in the inlet tract (charge pipes, intercooler, etc.) The combination of relocating and redesigning the diverter valve lead to a higher degree of reliability. This part is very problematic in the OEM configuration.
Overall driveability of the A3 after the installation of the Stasis Turbo Kit takes the car to the next level. With 300HP the car pulls and pulls through the RPM band. Because of the design of the turbo and cast manifold, there is little to no lag on the car. With the DSG transmission, the torque steer makes for a fun drive but the Agency Power paddle shifters help bag through the gears faster.
Next we will be upgrading the car with a Forge Motorsport front mount intercooler and some Status Racing seats.
