Most of audi's marketing pitch for people to buy there cars is the fact that they are safe and the quattro works pretty well. i was just thinking though. after watching some videos of the STI and EVo etc. doing some research. why has no one tried to figure out a way to make one of the quattro cars RWD. the new STI has a roller knob to control the transfer case so that the power can be focused to make it RWD. for older subaru's you can buy a dead front diff that has no gears so that the car is....RWD.....i'm not saying anything against the quattro i love it. its gotten me through snow i never thought it would. but during summer time i'd love to be able to make it just RWD and have some fun with that. seeing how the b6's a majority are 1.8t's yes a nice motor but isnt very strong in its stock form. wouldn't have some type of RWD such as using a front diff delete or electronic t-case. couldn't that open more power because there would be less drive train loss?

just a weird thought i had.

yeah, buy the StaSIS center and rear differentials to make the quattro system more rear biased. it only works in manual equipped cars

    Re: awd. fwd. rwd.

fwiw, the thing on sti's is notorious for causing drivetrain damage/failure.

everyone i know with an sti has to leave theirs disabled (they never roll it back or turn it on at all) because after the few times they did they started to get wierd binding and popping in their drivetrain. not good.

as far as making quattro rwd - you'd need to find a way to remove the front axles and still seal off the transmission. we don't have a "front diff" so to speak... we have a center and a rear, and the only thing i can think of that might work (mechanically speaking) would be to have some plates machined that would seal off where the front axles are supposed to go, and that have a "bearing" with axle splines on the outside of them.

essentially you'd bolt those on, find a shorter axle, and then bolt that up like normal. leaving you with "rwd"

i have no idea how that might affect the center diff though. clint could chime in here with some more knowledge of how everything bolts up.

EDIT*** after reading that link, it makes me wonder how he sealed up the tranny around the axle seals... i didn't see anything about that. and his solution for the axles is much better than mine.

    Re: awd. fwd. rwd.

You would have to get a spare set of axles as well, cut the male spline off that fits in the front hub assembly, and put it back in the hub. Without the axle in, or the spline in, the hub can not support the weight and will bend

i dont like bmw.....my brother had one and i did not like it. our cars could do alot better with rwd. fwd is just a cheap way to make a car move. it makes no sense at all......the physics of fwd dont add up.....

even shawn admits it - it's just a good, economical way to get around. if he needed quattro he'd have it.. but it wasn't a huge concern when he got the car... he lives in florida lol, when does he ever need awd? in his situation i'd probably just save the gas and get fwd too.

from a performance stand point it doesnt make sense, but from a safety/economy standpoint fwd is MUCH better for the average consumer/commuter. (not to mention when it comes to fwd vs. rwd in bad weather [rain/snow/ice/etc] fwd is even more of an advantage to normal people)

have you ever driven a high hp FWD car in the rain? Believe me it SUCKS and dont tell me it doesn't rain in FL.

People just dont understand how weak the rear half shafts are, they are just not designed to handle being the only part to push a 3200+ pound car.

we were talking about someone disputing the physics of fwd and why it was ever employed. If I didnt's specifically mention that I meant normal cars for normal people I meant to (too lazy to scroll down read my own post again lol) but I meant that when you WERENT looking at it from a performance perspective it makes perfect sense.

and if you're NOT looking at it that way - that rules out high HP fwd cars.

that being said -- torque steer is a bitch rain or shine. launching a car and ACTUALLY getting it to hook (instead of the usual burn or hop) is cool until you end up over half a lane. my first car was a modded gst.... not the fastest car ever by any means, but fast enough for me to not another fwd lol

Well even my stock eclipse GST (FWD turbo) was a bitch to drive in the rain, it was night and day compared to my A4 back when it was fully stock. One of the reasons I will most likely never get another FWD daily driver.
