    RS4 or RS6..... Hmmm

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well I've been in agony the last few months.... I have been shopping for a new car. Either a RS4 or RS6...lol. Anyways The few RS6's I've gone to check out are not in as good of condition as I'd of liked. Also, they all have 35K+ miles on them with wear and tear in the cabin. Now I expect some of this, but not nearly as much as I saw.....Also, they are unfortunnatly somewhat dated cars now technology wise. Now for the RS4, I would of already been in one but for one reason: I don't really know how to drive a stick (ya ya laugh it off). I have never owned a manual and fear that I may not like it after I get settled in and used to it. This is more of a rant than anything but seriously, I am going insane toying with these ideas. Or just to keep my car for awile longer..AHHHH! Anyways what would your RS owners reccomend? I'm seriously losing my mind here...

RS4. The old RS6 is way too high maintence. As long as you don't have to deal with stop and go traffic you'll enjoy the manual.

I've only had manual cars and then I decided to try going to an auto. Got myself a BMW 540 auto.....6 months later it was time to sell it. Even with the stop and go traffic of Atlanta, if you love driving...you'll love the manual.

I can't say I've had many cars, but I don't see myself going automatic anytime in the near or far future. You will NOT regret getting the RS4. I'm sure it won't be the easiest car to learn on, but you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Dont worry about learning how to drive a stick. If you are not one of those people who are always on the phone/drinking coffee/reading/writing during driving- you wont regret it.

RS4 is actually an easy stick to drive if you can get 1st to 2nd smooth.

I say go with the RS4, Audi Manual transmission cars tend to be pretty easy to live with. The only reason to consider the RS6 would be if you get stuck in a lot of bumper to bumper traffic, if not RS4 all the way. Manual cars are a lot of fun to drive, the only reason I have a tip car is because living in Chicago turns rush hour into a parking lot.

the problem with RS6 is the suspension leaks and it's expensive to fix. the tranny is not that strong for that car.

to further mavericks post, im pretty sure you need to pull/drop the motor to change the 02 sensor on the rs6 too. its a really sweet car, but a bitch to maintain from what ive read. id buy an rs6 if i was going to showcase it and never drive it

Honestly, if you choose the RS4 then do yourself (and the car) a favor and buy a used beater for <$1500 and learn how to drive a stick on that thing just so you get an idea. Anything you screw up on the RS4 would cost much more than that anyway.

Good luck finding a standard rental in the US.

Who does that? After you consider taxes, insurance, and the hassle of registering it there's no way it's worth it. You'd have to be pretty bad to cause $1500 in damage learning. Just rember it's better to stall than slip the clutch.

    Re: RS4 or RS6..... Hmmm

people might get pissed at me for this, but i let my friend learn how to drive stick on my S4 since its such an easy car to drive. The only restriction you have to put on yourself while learning is to never go above 1500 rpms until your clutch is all the way off... go test drive a manual car somewhere and youll see how easy and enjoyable it is!

My friend went and test drove a mustang for 3 hours one day and they just let him take it, maybe you can give that a shot... if you're determined you will learn very very quickly.

Im with everyone else... get the RS4. If the manual transmission situation really bothers you then maybe you could consider an S6. They are auto, new technology, sweet fast car. Not sure what your budget is though. g'luck with your decision!

+1..best thing to learn how to drive stick is on a cheap beater..1500 is too expensive haha. i'd go for one that's under $1000. buy it, drive it for a week and sell it or donate it for tax purposes.

Lots of people do that. When I was 16 my dad bought a 1992 Mazda Protege for $700 to learn on, not any of his 'real' cars. I'm glad he did, so was he. Ended up selling it for about the same price, so all we had to buy was gas for me to learn stick.

No you don't, you'd have to not know how to drive a manual (like the OP) and decide to figure out how to do it on a 420 hp, $75,000 car. I honestly think that knowing how to drive stick BEFORE you try to drive an RS4 is a very good idea. Even people who are veterans of MT's can screw up and blow a clutch.

The RS4 runs that same suspension so you're gonna have the same leaks with it also. Trust me, everyone who owns an RS4 has had their suspension leak. If they say they haven't, they haven't looked under their car.

Anyway's get the RS4 and you won't look back. No really, since you can't drive a stick, you'll be the guy in back. All joking aside, get the RS4 if you really want one.

Learn to drive the manual; all enthusiasts should be able to do this.

Plus, it's a lot more fun .. you will not regret it. But .. you really should learn on a different car. I'd say at least a few weeks would be appropriate before picking up the RS4.

    Good Luck and enjoy.

as pizdetsauduxa said, you can rent a manual to try out. some friends of mine have done this. I believe the company is called "Rent a Wreck" or something similar. Good advice

Ya I know, It looks awesome, unfortunatly my budget is right around 70K, plus I kind of want to get out of my S before I end up putting more miles on her and its depreciates even more....I think the C6 RS6's will be going for around 100K... bit pricey for me as of now...

In that case i would deffinetly go for the rs4
once you learn how to drive stick an auto will be too boring for you
on the flip side if you really dont want a manual the new s6's are gorgeous
and right in your price range..along with a nice bit of power (v10 435hp w/tiptronic trans)

personally i think so much power with an auto trans is just a waste..because
its SO much more fun with a stick...you can really feel the car, not just hear it

    Re: RS4 or RS6..... Hmmm

btw, when you sit in the car. you better adjust the seating postion so you have enough force to apply to the clutch pedal.
    tips for not stalling.
never feel embarrased. go out and drive the car yourself, a passenger will not do any good. be confident.
try to feel the point where you can let go the clutch and not stalling with enough gas input.
a little more gas can prevent stalling. just dont bang/dump the clutch and expect the car will take off, sometime it doesnt. lol
    alright, enough saying.
you will enjoy your RS4 very much in the future.

I reckon in 5 years you won't have a choice (to find manual in new cars). The new dual clutch/manumatic revolution is going to eliminate manuals. Unfortunately say some, but we have to welcome progress (for it is, apparently, beautiful)!
