CEL came on! need some help.

I'm posting from my blackberry now. I started the car to go to lunch and only made it out of the parking lot when the car started running real rough and then the CEL came on. I immediately turned around and parked back in the parking lot. I'm gonna get a ride home after work and get my vag-com. What do you think is the problem? The car is a 30v 2.8 btw

That pretty much describes it. I was kinda thinkin coil pack as well. I'm assuming all vag-com would say about bad coil pack is misfire, coerrect? How much are they as far as cost?

Yeah, all the VAG-COM would show was a misfire in cylinder whatever.. If that is the case before you go by another coil pack swap around the coil pack from the misfiring cylinder with a good coil pack just to be certain thats whats wrong. If its the coil pack the misfires will move to whatever cylinder you swapped with.

This may seem like a real dumb question, but can you do that with the 2.8s? I thought they just had the one unit.

OK. Scanned the car, came back with 4 faults.

    VAG-COM Version: Release 409.1-US

    Component and/or Version: 2.8L V6/5V MOTR AT D01
    Software Coding: 06251
    Work Shop Code: WSC 06335
    4 Faults Found:
    16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
    P0300 - 35-00 - -
16688 - Shareware Version. To Decode all DTCs

Would this point to a likely bad coil pack? This is what I would need, correct? LINK

Re: CEL came on! need some help.

It could be a bad spark plug or wire.

Im getting p0302 DTC and i just changed all my spark plugs first to see if that solves the problem. I reset the CEL and it hasnt been on.......yet.

Car runs and idles alot better now.
Not to mention I had some rips in the intake flex pipe which my friend and I temporarily covered with Black tape until I order the part.

    2.8 doesnt have coil packs.
It has an ICM. If one of those go bad the whole thing needs to be replaced.
But, I would eliminate plugs and wires first.

Swap cylinder 4 & 6 plug wires and see if the CEL comes up for cylinder 6.
Cost saving tips before buying an ICM.

I already ordered the ignition coil pack. The plugs should be good as they were just changed a few months back. If the coil pack doesn't fix it I'll definitely check the wires, I'll probly buy some new wires before long anyway. Thanx for the tip.

no...swap the wires first. dont install the ICM because if thats not it you cant return it I think.

im saying this if you have access to an OBD reader. That way if it follows to the other cylinder you'll know its the wires.

i'd replace that spark plug anyway too.
They're only like 3 bucks each. OE ones to.

    ok,
here is a brief awesome drawing I just did for you

Also, on the top of the spark plug wires they are numbered too. Its the part that sits on the spark plug.

ex: if the problem is with cylinder 2, swap the wires from cylinder 5.
and see if the code follows.

Well I finally got around to checking under the hood this morning. Went out and pulled the wires to check for visual damage, And what do ya know. the wire for plug 4 had a broken end on the ICM connection. A place in town ordered the wires and they'll be here Tues. I'll try them on and if that fixes the problem I'll just send The ICM back when it gets here.

When I was rockin my 2.8 I picked up a set of wires from Bahn Brenner that were the shit. I don't know if you're rockin a 12V or not, but $73 is cheaper than I found them anywhere around here.

Na I got the 30v. The cheapest I could find a set of 6 for was about $130 online plus shipping. So I just called carquest in town here and had them order me a pair for $130, then I won't have to pay for overnight shipping which was like another $60-$80.

If you think $130 is a lot. I called the dealer to see if they had any in stock and they wanted $50 per wire. I said no thanx I'll order all 6 for $130.

ok, so I changed both the wires and the coil pack and the car still runs kinda rough. I cleared the CEL to see if it would still throw the same code but nothing is coming up. Now what?

Just got done changing plugs about 10 mins ago. Same thing. Went out to test and the CEL came back. Scanned it and it threw the same codes as before. So that's new cables new coil pack and new plugs. What now?

Sounds like you are going through the same thing I am. I have replaced spark plugs and cables. I also cleaned out the PCV hose by replacing.
Audi dealership says I need to clean my injectors/fuel rail. So I'm putting Sea Foam in the gas tank today.
My CEL comes on about once per month, seems to happen when first starting.
I'll let you know how it goes.

Yeah definitely let me know if you figure it out. Ill do the same. Anybody have any more ideas? I'm thinking of just bringing it to my mechanic and letting him figure it out.

recheck the spark plug ends of all the wires. i had a 2.8 that i worked on about a month ago. the plugs and wires were done at another shop and 2 wires were pinched on install. this caused the the spark to avoid the plug all together and short to the cylinder head instead. if this is the case, you will see hairline cracks with white discoloration (heat from spark) near the base of the plug wire. electrical tape can be a temporary fix but ultimately you may need another set of wires. hope this helps. peace.

Yeah I replaced the cables with brand new ones. My old ones were damaged. No luck though. Problem still persists.
