its nagaro blue with 66k and the aluminum trim and color matched seats, it has a cold air intake and aftermarket DV's the only bummer i can find on it is that its an auto, i really want an 01 avant but the price that was given to me i would be willing to settle for the sedan. so what im here to ask is, should i look for anythign in particular when purchasing this? how much power can the factory tranny withstand? opinions? i currently have a 1.8t b6 so i know itll be alot more power.

don't get an auto if you plan to go stage 3 ever. yes, yes, it can be done with the right mods and money, but to me its too much work when you have a choice at the beginning. just keep looking, there are plenty out there

I would prefer the auto, the transmission in the S4 is the ZF 5HP24. this transmission will cost you less to rebuild than a manual gearbox (its something you can do on your own too without any special tools) and can handle more than 400ftlbs of torque and is intalled on several vehichles that produce 400ftlbs or more (see link below)

considering with a manual you will have syncro problems that will cost you thousands to have fixed, i'd go auto.

and despite what everyone says, you can flush these transmissions at home without any magical dealer-only pixie dust like I've had alot of people tell me. and you can use dextron 3 in it as long as you do a complete flush and don't mix it with the audi fluid in there (basically, don't do a pan service of just D3)

oh yeah, what to look for in these transmission:

-slow engagement of 1st gear (bad solenoids, easy fix) this is quite noticable, the tranny shudders if your too hard on the gas pedal.

    and

-slipping first gear under hard acceleration, it feels like a bit of lag when before the gear fully engages, but its more common in BMW's than audi's.
whats happening here is there is fluid leaking past the f-clutch drum and it takes a moment for the pressure to build up in order to overcome the leaking and engage the clutch pack.
if it gets really bad you can put in a bottle of lucas tranny fix and that should make it last several more thousand K so you can sell it or save up $300 for a new f-clutch drum, friction material, and stators.

i run stg 3 tip and it is not a huge deal to build up, i am runnning a tip ship and a upgaded TQ convertor from 2bennett nd it is great, 400 + lbs at the wheels TQ and no issue with the trans. Befor stg 3 my car ran stg 2 for 30K on the trans with no problems, the auto trans is strong, just take car eof it and don't beat on it all the time Good luck on the new car
