Last night was a bit scary!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So last night we went to Alki beach (beach in Seattle WA at like 9pm) and everything was going just fine! Around 10pm when we were all leaving, i noticed a wierd noise coming from my front left wheel making like a wooshing noise!

I didn't see anything wrong with the drive so i ignored it. When i hopped on the freeway that when sh!t hit the fan!!! I was going like 60mph and my entire car felt like it was going to fall apart! I could hear everything single piece in the car shaking as if i had a .05 cal machinegun mounted on the top of my car! The trip home was about 35 miles.

So i get home and kinda freaked out, so i called Audi roadside to get my car to have i towed to Barrier (where i work). So it gets here and i'm at work now too. and here is the convo i had with my service advisor:

Advisor "Nico, did you leave your car unattended last night for whatever reason?"

Me "No, we were at Spuds and my car was in my sight all day and i could literally throw a 50lb dog at my car and hit it"

Advisor "well this is what we found out about your car. You either really pissed someone off or someone tried to take your wheel off"

    Me "are you serious?"

Advisor "yes, you had 3 lugs missing, 1 lug just about to fall off, and only 1 lug holding your wheel onto your car!"

I'm a little freaked out at this point that someone would do that! Locking lugs is my next mod for sure!

sorry to hear that... but things like that happen all the time and you were lucky enough to find all 4 wheels still on your car. I think someone was taking your wheel and something freaked them out and they left without completing the job. Either that or you're a real jerkoff who deserves to get into an accident? I hope not.

Why the hell would you drive when you hear a wooshing sound. That means that AIR is rushing out from something that typically holds air. Like a tire. You're lucky you didn't do anything else to the car. But year, that really sux. Hopefully everything will get taken care of soon.

wow that's crazy, (on my phone, what wheels you have?).

If your car was within your sight it's hard to think they did it front of you. I think it happened somewhere else, but wheel locks are vital when you have aftermarket wheels.

Thankfully everything turned out well, cause from that 35 mile drive, hmmm wheel fall off = fail

I think I read this on here somewhere... But aren't lock nuts kind of pointless since you can pretty much buy the tools to unlock them anywhere? I mean, if someone really wants your wheels and knows where you live, it would be pretty easy for them to scope it out, get the right tools and come back. It's definitely one of my biggest fears though... waking up to go to work and my car is on blocks or on it's rotors. I guess that's why we have insurance though...

well yes but its going to be much more work and should just make them forget about it and move on..thats like when you lock a bike up with that lil lock to a pole...all thats needed is bolt cutters or a couple guys to rip that sign down real quick..but usually its just too much out of the way to do it..my thoughts of course

Very true...unless they are scoping out your pricey HREs - then it's a totally different story and the extra work is worth it. At the same time there probably aren't that many crackheads trying to make a quick buck who are also car enthusiasts and can recognize an expensive wheel.

Re: Last night was a bit scary!

The same thing happened to me! I thought the front of the car was coming apart. Someone unsuccessfully tried to either sabotage me or try to steel my NAD wheels, I think it was the wheels. The interesting part of the story was when I brought my car to the dealer. They charged me 100 bucks and sent me off with only three lugs on two of the wheels. When I asked if this was safe for driving, the service advisor said, "just don't take it on any long trips" as I drove away with my 8 year old son in the car. Needless to say I would never use that dealer again for service let alone buy a car from them (I've bought and leased four Audi's in the last eight years). You were lucky, as was I.........

Re: Last night was a bit scary!

Actually I had almost the same exact thing happen to me. I got my new coils put on about a month ago and they had to be adjusted about three times for the perfect height so the shop in PA (I won't name names) didn't fully tighten the driver side front wheel. The lugs were in but only a couple threads through.
So I start driving home (hour drive) on the highway at 60mph when my car shakes violently. I slow down and continue but it gets worse every time I accelerate. I get really worried so I put off at the next stop into a empty parking lot and come to a complete stop. I get out of the car and 4 out of 5 lugs are on the ground from the side road to the parking tile and my $1500 wheel was held on by 1 fucking lug. Man was that some of the scariest shit I ever saw.
I had to go to a has station to get it tightened since I didn't have my tools and I got home safe and sound about two hours later. The next day I had to drive 7 hours and 500 miles to school in North Carolina. I would have missed school and my car was almost is a huge accident not to mention the damage to my wheels.

Wow we are both extremely lucky....I want to kill that mechanic more than anything in the world ever

Re: Last night was a bit scary!

If you don't have any reason to suspect sabotage, you should probably re-torque your wheels next time you remove them, not only after the car is on the ground, but after a quick test-drive. And keep an eye to make sure they're properly torqued as time passes.

You got very lucky. If you have that kind of violent indication of trouble, unless you are in a situation where you absolutely cannot pull over (like a highway with no breakdown lane or a tunnel) you should stop and inspect the situation. A wheel with one lug bolt should be glaringly obvious.

    YEAH! WHAT HE SAID!

how the FK do you not just stop and check it out? That's more amazing than the fact that you made it home missing 3 lugs. Sounds like there are some screws loose too... ;)

Locks are a deterrent to crimes of opportunity, not a fool proof solution. If someone wants something bad enough they will get it. It's kind of like a deadbolt on your door with a big window next to it.

Yep, this is very true (also what Glassnpowder said). I used to have some wheels that came with locking lugs. Once, I ended up misplacing the key to the lugs and had to call the company to get a new one. I got all prepared with the credit card # I purchased the wheels with, any/all paperwork and invoices they came with, and everything. What happens, but they just simply ask for my address to send a fucking new one???? Some thief could've just as easily done what I, the real owner, did to get a new lug key......so basically its like they said; if someone wants your wheels bad enough, unfortunately, they WILL get them.

All you can do is protect them the best you can, and hope you can get 'em back if someone does make off with them. Sad world we live in today......
