BT/BAT guys-- would you do it again?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've noticed a couple of guys who are BT or BAT over the past couple of weeks/months saying that they don't know if it was worth the time and money, 1, because of reliability problems, or 2, because they never get to fully use the power unless they pay for a track day.

So I ask you guys who are BT, do you think it was worth the $5k+ for that extra power? if you could do it all over again, what would you do differently?

Re: BT/BAT guys-- would you do it again?

After driving in a BAT, its so worth it lol

to be honest, I think getting a spare motor and working on that makes the difference, so slowly but surely you have it all done

Re: BT/BAT guys-- would you do it again?

Have you seen my videos? I was enamored with my BT and am more than so with my BAT. Reliability? Yeah some people had problems. I had problems with manifolds, until the SPA piece came out and I've been Daily Driving it now for the better part of 7 months and have over 8k on this setup. I got a base tune file and drove 500 miles for custom tuning with no issue, I then drove to Georgia from Pa 3 weeks after that for a lovely 1200 mile trip.

If I was to do it over again with all I've learned I would:
    1) Buy a spare motor (complete)
    2) Buy all parts slowly, but keep the list the same
    3) Build it myself and have a machine shop locally do overbore etc...

I'd do it again, but only if I did it differently.....i started building before I had all the parts together.

WHEN/if i do it again (ie, go bigger).....i'm definitely buying a spare motor

Why does location matter? Last time I was on Long Island there was a Camaro in traffic next to me that could barely keep its slicks from spinning out. I've seen many fast cars there.

Re: BT/BAT guys-- would you do it again?

I love mine. Its 100% reliable. I've got over 5000miles on the new engine and set-up and it works fine. I had 5,000miles on the old set-up and that worked fine. I rev it up to high RPMs every time I drive it.

My Avant is built to drive and I use it to travel everywhere. Shit, I installed my Cat Cams and without any testing I just hopped in the car and drove 8hours up to Maine and back (with logging of course). No problems.

If I were do it again I'd build the head to rev it up to 8500-9000 and I'd also put a 35R on the motor.

id do it again for sure, but if i were to do it over id do many many many things different... too many things to list here but heres a couple... bought an 06A block'd car, built the motor and broke it in on stock turbo/tune, standalone from the get go, bought a shittier car to start with, straight to a 35r, ect

Hahaha aww man, I actually made this thread to try and convince myself that a BAT would be too much trouble and not worth it, you sure killed that thought.

It looks like anything below 3071r I'd want to do it over again.... Those student loans sure are tempting right about now!

if you have to use a loan to build a car you are in trouble. If you can't afford it, stay away. No use digging a hole just for a car that will lose its value pretty damn quick.

Re: BT/BAT guys-- would you do it again?

    ^ Probably...

The other issue here is Audi guys are stuck on bigger turbos. They don't realize the diminishing returns due to the engine itself not being optimized to flow the air from larger turbos.

I will use myself as an example...

Gt35r on a stock small port head... Yes the car was fast, but I could always tell the turbo was choked up, not able to spin freely and flow air.

I knew from the get go that the small port head was not going to do the trick, but it was a money issue and now I am in the process of addressing that.

If 2871r & 3071r guys spent another $3gs on a bad ass intake manifold, cams, and head work (and tune), then I think they would put out at least another 50 - 60 more WHP than they typically do.

yeah that's what my logical side is telling me. At least this lack of money is forcing me to do my research before I build/buy.

This whole full-time student part time working thing is a real bummer!

If you did it right the first time:

    Budget:
    5k for high 12s
    7k-10K for low 12s - low 11s.

Here's the budget i just put together in excel...

    gt3071....................1100
    spa manifold.............460
    wastegate...............230
    630cc injectors.........260
    tune.....................~800
    3" catback...............750
    hfc.........................250
    fmic........................900
    scat rods.................400
    walbro 255...............100
    a/f gauge................ 200
    ebc.........................100
    misc.......................~600

for a grand total of ~6200 + tax and shipping.

the way I see it, the supporting mods are pretty much the same for everything from a 28rs to a 3076. The 3071 seems like my favorite because it can make some pretty good power with just rods, and down the road I can go 2L, build the head, get a high flow intake mani, go with meth injection and I wont completely max out the turbo like I would with a 28rs or 2871 (or maybe I would).

yeah I have a sb stg 3 right now which I figured would hold up to the power as long as I didn't launch it (I don't like drag racing anyways).

I'll add an extra ~600 for misc junk in there.

you'll definitely want to step up to at least a stage 4 clutch while you have the motor out.

you'll also need to do the "well...since i have this part off i might as well upgrade" estimation too.

First $5k takes of 3 seconds off your 1/4 time.

Second $5k takes off an additional 1 second off your 1/4 time.

come on poopie, you're crushing my dreams here!

Re: BT/BAT guys-- would you do it again?

Id do it again for sure, i'm happy with my gt28rs and have 0 reliability issues. But i also didn't piece it together and i don't have an off the shelf tune so that helps also.

Second on what poopie said, if you don't have the money to do it then id hold off until you can handle it.
The only reason i wouldn't do it again is i hate spending money...until i get in it and go WOT of course.

for a grand total of ~6200 + tax and shipping.

the way I see it, the supporting mods are pretty much the same for everything from a 28rs to a 3076. The 3071 seems like my favorite because it can make some pretty good power with just rods, and down the road I can go 2L, build the head, get a high flow intake mani, go with meth injection and I wont completely max out the turbo like I would with a 28rs or 2871 (or maybe I would).

You need a good clutch / flywheel setup
Price EBC and AFR is way off especially EBC

Also you probably need to make that misc closer to $1500.

I don't see any internal engine parts besides rods. What about:
    Rod bearings
    Main bearings
    new piston rings
    main bolts
    ..............
I see no tools and no labor charges. If you are doing it yourself then you need some decent tools.

    P.S. The best time I know of with a 3071 on a b5 is 11.9 @ 115 (IIRC) (probably on c16)

BAT is worth every penny. I drive my car everyday and love it. I don't really have hesitation to spend money...but its not worth going into debt. Save up those pennies. One day you'll get there. Another option is to pick up used pieces as you go along and collect what you need as you have the money.

Try to have every part or the money to spare before you touch the car... I have been dropping money like water since I started my rebuild....... no wonder these projects take 6+ months.

This is sounding about right. I have a lot of tools (enough to take apart the front end/suspension/brakes/transmission) but I think there are some special ones that I'd need to take apart the head.

What is the price of the 630cc tune from ctapp? What kind of MAF does that file require (and how much do they run)?.
