    S4 brakes (complete swap)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I decided to go with S4 brakes. I have the calipers and S4 spindles. However, I thought that 2.8 Quattro Manual A4 axels would work in the front. The outside diameter is fine but the inside flange is the star pattern, not the round one that is on my 1.8TQM. Did the salvage yard send me the wrong axel or is this not going to work?

    Re: S4 brakes (complete swap)

You have to get the flanges that attach to the transmission and bolt to the axle. I believe you can get them from a 2.8 A4transmission or an S4. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I plan on doing this exact swap so let me know how everything turns out.

    Re: S4 brakes (complete swap)

I have coverd this here To fit the S4 brakes on a A4 Quattro you need the whole hub with drive shaft then you will need the gear box flanges off a FWD A4 either 2.8 or 1.8t it does not matter which.

You then need to just pop your Gear box flanges off and push in the FWD flanges then the S4 drive shafts will match up job done.

    Re: S4 brakes (complete swap)

Is it possible to get the S4 outer CV joint kit and put it on my existing A4 axels? Is it possible to use the A4 inners on the S4 axels? I see that ECS has an S4 outer CV kit for about a hundered bucks.

    Re: S4 brakes (complete swap)

The thing is you need the S4 uprights so that the S4 brakes will bolt on now matting the 1.8T CV joint to the S4 Hubs I would not be able to say if they will fit as I had the whole RS4 uprights with hub and drive shaft and only needed to get them to fit on the box.

    Re: S4 brakes (complete swap)

I'd be looking to this myself and for my friend. Is it the same swap as on a B6?

    Re: S4 brakes (complete swap)

I don't think B6 folks need to do anything but bolt the calipers and rotors on.

For the A4 we need to get S4 uprights which I have but our axels are a different size then the S4 ones. I am trying to see if we can use the S4 CV rebuild kit to make a hybrid axel with the A4 inners and the S4 outers.

    Re: S4 brakes (complete swap)

    On my 98.5 I had S4 brakes.

    Needed the following:

    S4 uprights w/ s4 wheel bearings
    2.8 5spd axles

    Everything mated up.
I have an 01 currently I'm about to do the brake conversion using my old parts again. 2001's have different hubs?

Militant-Grunt, did you need '00 or '01 2.8l axles or will any year 2.8 B5 axles work?

I have three sets of s4 uprights/hub assemblies available for 175 shipped each set. I have 2 sets of s4 brakes available, calipers, pads, lines, rotors, can can include hardware as well.

Also the swap requires you use the 2.8 5 speed axles as they share the larger outer spline/cv and the same inner cv for the 5 speed trans. If you were doing a 6 speed swap you would just straight use the s4 axles. You cant use s4 axles as they use a (I forget exactly) 10mm larger inner flange.

An adapter is not a smart idea as you would be introducing potential balancing issues and would be changing dimensions of the overall length of the shaft. You would have to shorten the axle shaft proportionally to run an adapter. It would need to be steel as it will see a lot of torque and fatigue so alum would probably not be a good choice there.

^^^ I believe he meant a CNC adaptor to bolt up the S4 caliper to the existing A4 hub. You were way out there with your axle adaptor lol

I would think that if a caliper carrier bracket could be made someone already would have. I have done this with Porsche brakes, but never thought about the S4 calipers. Going from a 11.3" rotor to a 12.6" only gains you about 1/2" of room to extend the caliper out, and the caliper body is bigger - probably not enough room to do it, unless you went to a larger rotor like a 13.1"

For people that don't know, if you have an 01 a4, your axles will work with the S4 uprights.

Just like anothersilver said, it's a direct swap for the front calipers and rotors. I did it on my friends B6. The B5 S4 rear brakes will not work on a B6 A4.

which S4 rear calipers do I need to look for for my 97 A4 Quattro? and which rotors do I use with this upgrade?
is there anything else I need for this to bolt on and use?
My rear brakes are shot. I'm grinding metal to metal, and I have to buy new rotors and pads, so why not upgrade while I am at it, right! I need some help on this guys, so any replies will be greatly appreciated.

as for the fronts, I have the S4 aluinum uprights, but nothing else.
as I understand this, I need to get new hubs/flanges, which I still dont understand what to get here... I look up part and the bearings look just like mine (which is WRONG! A4 bearings are plain-jane press in bearings, while the S4 takes a different type all the "stock photos" used in ads is not helping at all.) once i get new bearings/hubs/flanges... I understand I will need B5 a4 2.8L manual FWD axles to fit the S4 upright hubs and also bolt to my transmission (01a)

Now I hope to have a 6spd to swap in next time my clutch goes out. (or when I destroy the 5spd) I made 517awhp yesterday and that's still without nitrous. New cams should be in, a VVT tensioner, tool steel wrist pins and I am ready to spray stage 1 and stage 2 (technically about a 140 hp shot of nitrous on top of over 500hp I dont think the 5spd will take it. any wagers?
SOOO, suppose I setup front brakes on the S4 uprights would I then use S4 axles if changing to a 6sd?

also, is there a part number for the bushing used in the lower control arm bore for these aluminum uprights? I have a CNC file for making them, but it's pretty expensive. I'd like to see if there's a replacement part available for less?

    thanks for any help
