    Re: Photos of customer stereos

Here's some minor work I had done - btw, it is getting DAMN expensive to do any sort of custom stuff nowadays....the times of dropping a new head unit into a universally sized dash are O-V-E-R! As such, shops must charge much more for labor in general now.

Mounted, audio/power hard-wired portable Sirius Stiletto (best mp3 player/device EVER):

Custom molded fiberglass stealth enclosure for a 10W7:

This pic shows how far up the side of the trunk area the enclosure extends behind the trunk lining:

a JL 500/1 mounted on the underside of the rear deck-lid where the rear sub and speakers are mounted:

(view from back seats with section folded down)

    (another angle)

Apline bass gain adjuster (mounted in small slot just below the steering column):

Overall trunk view to show the space saved:

    Enjoy!!!

    Re: Photos of customer stereos

Got it done at Rolling Thunder in San Rafael, CA - I used to bring my old car there way back in high school for work, but it was a much different shop then. On that note, like I said before, it's a much different industry now, too. Places like this are hard-up for business nowadays because of the way dashes are being built, and there really is no such thing as a $400 drop-in head unit job anymore. While this looks like a very simple, non-flashy setup, it was definitely costly - I won't give numbers, but I could've had STaSIS C/O's installed, a ecu flash done, and still would've had some spare money left over for a Carbonio intake or something comparable.

However, I used to have what JL calls the Hi Output Enclosure for that sub, which took up 60 - 70% of the trunk space in my old car. It didn't even fit laterally into the A4 trunk, so I was forced to go with something stealth because the only other box that fit was VERY small and would've been a serious downgrade in sound quality. At the same time, I'm a huge snow-sporter and needed to maintain both overall space and the pass-thru to the cabin of the car when the seats are folded down.

Here's a pic of the enclosure from JL:

This is the one I just couldn't go with:

I would love to install one of my subs that is sitting in my garage in the cubby area but between the cost of fabrication and installation, it's probably going to remain in the garage

It's actually quite the opposite. The HO boxes are built primarily for volume. They're great for rap or anyhting with very "boomy" bass, however the smaller sealed boxes from JL have vastly better sound quality. The W6's & W7's love to be in small sealed boxes for their peak performance. With a smaller sealed box they can take more power, and will hit super hard and clean. You really can't go wrong with a JL sub in any enclosure though...

    Re: Photos of customer stereos

I just have a weak amp and 2 10"s that were on the car when i bought them. Not bad i guess, but im not much into systems.

I have a Kenwood Navi screen that i had on my celica, was thinking of putting that in, cause i think its a lot better then the RNS-E. Its just cool cause i dont have to buy updated map cd's every year. and the fact that i can put dvd's in there is cool and its a touchscreen. Just a lot easier to use then the stock navi one. The only thing that i like about the stock then my kenwood, is that the SD card slots and the steering wheel controls. I use those more then i would the nav or dvd so im going to stick with it.

Hrm, I was under the impression there are pretty strict air-volume parameters that define both the loudness and the sound quality......like there is some wiggle room, but if you deviate too far from the defined measurements it'll degrade both aspects. Not to mention, I heard that little black box, which both sounded like crap AND is pretty ugly in my opinion.

I do, however, notice that the crispness of a drum kick is much better out of the fiberglass enclosure, which is undoubtedly smaller in volume than the HO box (I listen to all types of music, from rock to rap to electronica). I attribute that partly to the sealed (vs. vented) enclosure that's made out of a more resilient material in fiberglass, and the overall interior cabin of an Audi is more sealed than my old ride. Thanks for the pointer tho, and you have a sweet lookin' setup! Any chance of gettin' a pic without the trunk sheet pulled over your stuff?

I'm running a alpine 9887, front comps are Hertz 165's with a Sundown 100.4 amp for the front and a Sundown 1000d for the Digital Designs 9510g sub. its rated 1500 continuous max output is 6000 watts on the sub. The sub alone weighs 50lbs plus another 45lbs for the box which is tuned to 40 hertz.

Specs on the sub are here in-case you didn't believe me about the 6000 watts!

Yeah, I listen to pretty much everything too. I found that the smaller sealed box (a seperate chamber for each sub internally) just hits so much cleaner, and harder than a ported box. I get very quick response which is needed for things like hard rock with a fast repetative kick drum (where a ported box just sounds like constant rumbling bass as opposed to seperate clean beats). If you run enough power, and have good subs, a sealed box also sounds amazing with rap, and will still hit really low without any hint of distortion. Here's a couple more pics of the set-up:

Had to make everything "quick release" with handles on the box so I could use my "Avantness" if I ever need to

Mine isn't from JL actually, which would explain why you can't find it, lol.

It is a custom-made fiberglass enclosure that was shaped/installed by taking an exact mold of the space between the outside sheet metal and trunk liner in the rear fender/quarterpanel area (behind what people term the "cubby hole" that also houses the satellite receiver). Then, a few layers of Dynamat were placed on the inner face of the sheet metal for reinforcement, and it was finished up so all you really see is the woofer face sitting flush with the trunk lining.

The shop I went to is just top-notch (Rolling Thunder in San Rafael, CA), and they have a great crew. One of the guys who worked on my car actually drives a B6 S4, and had already done a similar molding for a B7 A4; although it was not for a W7. This work is not cheap - all materials and labor for the install of the box was about $1,400.

Anyone familiar with the magnet/voice coil assmebly on that sub knows it doesn't fit in to any small holes easily!

I've never felt a sub hit harder than a 13w7.

I saw in a hummer with four 12" eclipse subs, very well done. But compared to the two 13w7's that I heard. It just didn't compare. My chest literally hurt after I got out of the JL car.

Zapco DC360.4 - I specifically went with this amp because it could be mounted upside down due to the internal fan and the wires are all concealed due to the front mounting terminal design. Another plus is that the amp is tuned by using a laptop and Zapco software.

Wonder why JL doesn't make A4 stealth boxes (I'm going off a very rough memory w/ that comment, however).

im no professional, but how would the sound be different if our subs were turned around and faced towards the front of the car. i have a ported box that pushes out a good amount of air and with the back seats down i think that would be cool. i havent been able to try it because i dont have long enough cable to make it work.

How did you mount your amp to the top of the trunk? Do you have more pictures of the amp install? Looks great!

Probably because the demographics they use show that the majority of A4 owners aren't interested in such a product.

Also, from my understanding, it is quite expensive for the R&D of those boxes. They need to be sure that their rate of return will be a net positive for the company, otherwise the execs. won't give the go ahead.
