Car heavily influenced by lines in pavement

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
When I am driving on the freeway and there are areas where the road composition physically changes and there are grooves that cut right or left, my car tends to really pull in the side direction on those. Otherwise, when driving on normal smooth roads it's fine all the time. Is this a typical thing on FWD cars or is it my tires (General Exclaim UHP) ?

That has happened to me regardless of what tires I use (Pirelli P6, Falken Ziex 912, BFG KDW2); and with stock suspension. I am quattro and not FWD too.

    Correct, Its alignment.

I think its specifically the toe-in. The factory alignment specs for our cars cause this to happen.

Yeah must just be the way it is... I got an alignment not long ago and I was within spec. Otherwise car doesn't pull at all.

It's the road. With a smooth road, your car is fine, correct?

You are talking about ruts in the road that literally pull your car in a different direction. This is totally normal and it is the road, not your car. Simple physics actually....lol!

Yeah ruts. not those standard concrete lines they put in freeways. Like where sometimes it is asphault that goes to concrete and there is a nasty gap or a big bubble of goo comming up. my car might follow that. Or on some really horrible roads where its a patch work, my car pulls all over. I just wondered in a RWD would this be much less visible?

Re: Car heavily influenced by lines in pavement

Difference in drivetrain will not matter at all! It's all road making the car move.

Roads peek in the middle to ensure that runoff leaves the road, with that said, it is very common for cars to pull to the outside of the road just because of that.

Cars with aftermarket suspension, or bigger tires, will feel this pull a WHOLE LOT MORE! RWD or FWD makes no diff.

It's normal to an extent. The wider the tires are the more apt they will be to follow imperfections in the road.

all cars do this to some extent. how severe? well, just make sure you have proper air inflation, make sure the tires are of the same brand, size. after that, its alignment.

Being from S.D. you probably know where i'm talking about on this one but do you know that patch on the 10 about 20 miles outside of Palm Springs where it is just god awful. Yeah, it's definitely the roads; my car seems to have a mind of it's own when i hit that patch of the freeway.

its the road. I have the same issues here when i get into lanes with street car rails.

also its normal to pull to the right slightly, so if you aren't paying attention it pulls away from oncoming traffic.

You should check the alignment of your wheels and while doing that, check to see if you have a warped rim.. It is normal to an extent but if you find yourself unable to control the car then you should check the above just to make sure..

    Agreed

I used to run my Generals at 32-33psi around, and used to have this issue

    I bumped it to
38PSI and have not had an issue since

I think the sidewalls with the Generals are too soft.
