Opinions on the '09 Jetta TDI

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm thinking about making the plunge over into VW land after doing some research on the new TDI. It doesn't have quite as many options as the A4, but 40+ mpg is def a winner for me. I'm gonna test drive one hopefully this weekend as i have never driven a TDI before. What's your take?

for a daily commuter its perfect. they are not fast and i think they redline at like 5k or something. 1000kms to a tank though, not sure what else you could really ask for! didnt read your link, is this that new clean diesel stuff or is that not out yet?

Re: Opinions on the '09 Jetta TDI

I think they are great cars, and the new one has great torque. It is, in my opinion, more fun to drive and feels a lot faster than the 2.5 jetta or rabbit. They get much better mileage than the EPA says they do as well. You just have to drive them like a economy car. If you try and drive it like a fun/sporty car you will end up being disappointed with the economy. If you drive it slowly and watch your shifts however, you will love it for driving around in the city.

They also have fabulous resale value. You can get a loaded low mileage MKV GTI for less than a TDI with 50K+ miles on it. They are a win in my books.

    Even better:

HERNDON, Va.—Volkswagen of America, Inc. today announced that buyers of the Jetta TDI sedan and SportWagen are eligible for a $1,300 Federal Income Tax Credit. The Internal Revenue Service has issued a certification letter affirming that the vehicles qualify for the Advanced Lean Burn Technology Motor Vehicle income tax credit.

I was thinking about one for months now, I posted a thread about one a while back, it had some body work apr stg2 and sportecs and the thing looked godly!! And to top it all off it was displacing close to 350 trq I think and 270 hp. They can be really quick.

The new Jetta TDI is coming out great, I have tested it, and I did like it, new engine , more HP 140hp and 236 lbs of torque, from last models we have seen,
Beside A6 avant I own as well 00 Golf TDI 90hp, so when I test drove it, you feel the difference, it is total different car, it is well worth to get one, however you need to calculate if it is worth for you to move, if you really need to force yourself to change, because it might cost you , I don't know if you paid off your car if you lease or financing still, if you still paying off the car, you need to calculate your monthly costs vs getting new car, how much mileage you do on daily basis what might work for you better, if you lease if to wait to end of lease and return the car, or if you finance what is current value and how much you owe and what dealer might offer you for it,.. if you did the homework and you hardly committed go for it..

i havent seen more then 200hp out of this engine but still that would be plenty.
Its also available with panaromic sunroof and its cargo space is comparable to bigger suv's. You should really do numbers and calculate if paying more for diesel fuel and premium on a car will really save you money - my calcs showed i would have to keep the car for quite a long time before i would "save" any money. I think edmunds has a calc that will figure it out for you.

i only owe a bit more on my car, but i was looking to get an avant instead anyways, just looking at it. i do about 50+ or so miles a day i'd say, most of them highway. The price of premium here isn't much less than diesel (right now its actually higher), but im just concerned about it going back up. Either way i will be getting more mpg. I need to find out what trims/options you can get the TDI in, as i would like some of the SEL options.

200hp with how much torque? 300+ i'm guessing. All Hp is torque and RPMS. That shit looks hot. For a 3000lb car 2 have 300+ lbs of torque with the usual V-dub/Audi short gearing the thing will boogie.

Re: Opinions on the '09 Jetta TDI

Some ruff calculations show you save $40 p/mo.

I used http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm to approximate the mpg. The standards for this went up as of 2008 hence the vw probably gets better mpg and the audi less then what they state. Depending on mark up the wagon will cost you a minimum of $26,000 w/ tax and lisc assume $28,000, 0 down and finance at 6% for 60 mo your monthly payment will be $550. If your current monthly payment is less then $510 you will not be saving money.

    05 a4qt auto (21/30) avg mpg 26
    09 vwtdi auto (29/40) avg mpg 35

    15,000 miles p/yr

    Gallons consumed (15,000/avg mpg)

    gallons * gas = $ p/yr
    a4 577 * $4 = $2308
    vw 429 * $4.25 = $1823

    Savings p/yr = $485 ($40 p/mo)

    Plus, you can chip it.

    Upsolute tune: http://www.upsolute.com/index.php?op...id_model=13165
    Code:
Power (hp)	140 hp 175 hp
Power (kW)	103 kW 129 kW
    Torque (ft/lb)	236 ft/lb 291 ft/lb
Torque (NM)	320 NM 395 NM

OT: The one I'm looking forward to is the Audi 3.0TDi, upsolute tune:
    Code:

What this calculation doesn't take into consideration is a possible savings in insurance plus how much the Audi will lose in resale compared to the TDI.Plus the price of diesel will be more stable than gasoline in the future

Re: Opinions on the '09 Jetta TDI

I think insurance would be cheaper on the audi since its older.

Resale value id give it to the diesel although i think the US market will be seeing a lot more so who knows how that will affect the value.

Why would diesel be more stable?
I'm guessing that there are less refineries for diesel and ive read that part of the reason its so expensive is that its being used for the machines which convert wheat into ethanol. Why they have to use one fuel to make another "clean" fuel is beyond me.

great engine, too bad they tacked so many cats that it gets 20mpg less then the euro equil. Well probably less than that but the 1.9l diesel my buddy has over there gets into the upper 50's easy.

One reason is diesel has shot up in price because it's reformulated.Once the market gets use to it,it will stabilize.(Gas will be going through a few more steps to make it cleaner thus driving up the price).
Another reason is there are more coal to diesel plants coming on line. It's not effected like E85 commodities.
There are more processes to make biodiesel than green gas.

I don't think I could do it just because it's a VW. I went from a B5 A4 to an R32 and was glad when it caught fire and burned to the ground. I'll just wait for Audi to adopt the technology.

    It's a status thing I guess...

Have you sat inside a VW lately?

I sat in the new sportwagen and the interior is very similar to my b6 a4, interior space and quality of materials were very nice.

Also all 2009 vw's get maintenance included.

The R32 had a sick interior...I'm familiar...but in the end it's a VW. I'm sorry, but that's how it is for me.
