    Hacksaw + Exhaust =

Ok, not really a hacksaw, maybe a plasma cutter.

I want to get rid of the resonators. You think I will get that raspy sound in higher RPMs?

    Re: Hacksaw + Exhaust =

If you have an RS4, then it will sound like a raspy american muscle car..... very unrefined and non german, imo

I say don't do it..... I did it on my previous RS4 and only drove 2 miles then I u-turned and headed back to the exhaust shop...

I did this on my Milltek Cat back and I love the way it sounds. Ended up with a little drone but only around 2K and I'm hardly ever in that RPM range.

    Re: Hacksaw + Exhaust =

Assuming we're talking about the stock exhaust, I have never heard it minus the stock resonators. I have, however, heard a B6 S4 with stock resonators and no mufflers. Just straight pipes all the way back. I have to say, it sounded pretty damn good from the outside. No idea what it sounds like in the cabin, though. Has to be a droning sonofabitch I would imagine.

    Re: Hacksaw + Exhaust =

One of the first mods I did. Cheap (or free if doing it yourself), and personally, I think it sounds great. It definitely opens up the exhaust and kicks it up a notch. There is a slight rasp but it's not a bad rasp if you ask me. I think it sounds amazing. I'd get a vid for you but I already added mufflers too. And the guy who did mine did a shit job so there's holes in the welding now. It was fine for a while. I'm getting piping done soon though. But I say do it. No reason not to, you can go back whenever you feel like it.

Has anyone just added mufflers to the stock system instead of doing a full cat back? and if so how did it work out? sound better? flow better? Please let me know and post some sound clips or point me to one if you know of one somewhere. Thanks.

so, I'm curious if you did the mod, and if so, any way you can post the results? Thinking of doing the same on my '05 S4 Avant.

    thanks.

I am not being cheap I have no problem buying an exhaust. I would never just cut shit off my stocker. I was just wondering if anyone has only done mufflers instead of a cat back. Basically just to get the sound, besides a cat back doesn't really do wonders for these cars anyway.

haha im in the same boat as them..full exhaust is too many pennies for my lil wallet to shell out...even know i have an a6 im thinking of doin just resignators..=DDD..will this add any hp difference? i would imagine opening it up at all would create gains..but im thinking more less because im cheep and just doin this im more less just looking at sound and throttle response..correct or no?

Cutting out your resonators will yield you no extra Hp. The resonator delete is more a "sound mod". Essentially the resonators will be replaced with straight pipes of equal diameter piping. While flow may be "increased" you wont see the same gains/sound as one would with a aftermarket cat-back exhaust system.

Yeah you don't get a big bang for the buck doing a full exhaust. I haven't personally heard a stock system with the resonators removed but if improved sound is all you're after, why throw a bunch of money at it? Let us know what you decide and how it turns out.

It's not so strange; those of us on a 'budget' still lust for the 'bang for the buck' solution; i.e.more 'grunt' (dynamometrically (sp?) and viscerally speaking).

save and do the real thing or dont bother. redoing mistakes winds up costing more than doing it right from the start.

    What's a mistake?

I'm proficient with a plasma cutter, and unbolting exhausts, I pop over to my buddy's shop, and we re-weld some pipe. Is it that big of a deal? I've made an exhaust out of stainless steel piecuts before...

Sorry - I don't feel like spending 1500 for an exhaust that will yield me next to nothing. I pretty much want it a little louder so I can rev match, not looking for power gains.

the mistake is the sound after. i didnt mean making a mistake in doing the actual work.

I'm thinking of doing this myself and did some poking around on yahoo and came across this thread:

    http://forums.audiworld.com/a6/msgs/799647.phtml

also, do you have any links to a diagram of the stock exhaust and also the angle that the straight pipe(s) will have to be? 2" piping for stock right? Just trying to get all my facts straight before I go out and buy anything.
