So Ive been trying to nail this problem down for awhile on an 04 A4 1.8T CVT (55k miles on it) that I used to own and gave as a gift to my sister in law. She loses about the entire coolant overflow tank in say about 2-3weeks of driving. There is no visible smoke while driving.
The rear flange is not leaking what so ever. So I thought it was the oil cooler, I replaced that, same thing still happening.
So Im down to two things, either leaky headgasket or turbo seals. Now Im really not thinking its headgasket as the performance of the car feels great, if there truly was a leaky headgasket id definetely have some rough idling and I feel definetely see some white smoke (coolant burning) from the tail pipe under hard acceleration or normal driving. So I feel its not that.
So now Im leaning towards it being a turbo bearing seal issue. I know the turbo is cooled via coolant so the coolant is passing through it, so that could be a culprit. Im thinking the leak is so slow that its not visible enough to see the white smoke from the exhaust. I was thinking of capping off the coolant lines going into the turbo to see if that stops it as I test to see if that it, but at the same time dont want to burn up the turbo. But that may not be an issue as my sister in law is driving, aint like she dragging it.
I just want to nail this sucker down. Im fairly close to buying a turbo and replacing it, but again dont want to drop the cash for that and find out that aint it either.
Anyone else have any ideas or experience on what it could be?
Thanks
Dixit
