Tinted tails, Let me see your backside!

I just got a second set of tails from aaaudiprotein, Fast shipper and great guy overall. I have a can of VHT and am planning on doing some tinting. However, I want to keep the white or transparent part white. I want to see what you guys have done to get some ideas. TIA.

i was thinkinf about it before purchasing those smoked depo lights. But why not just to use lamin x?

I just got done with the VHT job this past weekend. Actually left them without clear so they look matte. They look badass I must say. I tinted my clear part though. You can just not dust as thick on the clear part compared to the red parts and get it with just a light dusting of "smoke" color. Keep the can at least 12" away if not more like 15-18" away when spraying or you'll see darker spots of the red areas cause of the spray pattern out of the spray can... I did 1 pass per area start to finish then started that process again and did ~5-6 total passes over the entire tail. Also mixed up the direction I was spraying after each complete pass of the tail so there was an even coat. (ie up/down, down/up, left/right, right/left). Make sure you hit the edges of the tail well too.

How's the illumination, the VHT instructions warn about using more than 3 coats, since the light may not shine through? I used it on my sidemarkers with passes and it darkened them quite a bit.

Well I actually did 1 coat as in I did the 5 passes all at the same time without letting it dry in between complete tail passes. Since I was spraying from further away then recommended the coat on each pass went on VERY light... It also make a difference how light/dark the coat is just by how fast you are making your passes with the spray can.

Ah, those are the "silver" tail lights and he tinted the top...nice. I wanted to darken the red part since I have a darker color car. I wanted to leave the white alone for contrast.

Just did mine today...

I used the VHT and masked the white part. Then I used 3 coats of clear coat, buffed with rubbing compound and then buffed with polishing compound.

Here are the tails getting sprayed:

Did my sidemarkers over again, I sanded it with 400 grit to get the old tint out, then used 800 grit to smoothen, 1000 grit to get the scratches out. Buffed with rubbing compound, then polishing compound. Sprayed with a adhesive promoter and then VHT, and clear.

Tails came out Nice. You should relocate your autobots badge where the audi rings are located and remove the rest, now that would look badass.

I used automotive clearcoat. I had some left over after doing my lids. If I ever do the tails over again, I think I would use adhesion promoter prior to the VHT, it made for a smooth surface. Learned that later after doing my sidemarkers.

BTW, anyone know what the lower lamp towards the license plate is? I can't seem to get it to turn on.

^^^ I believe they are Depo tails and can be found on ebay for pretty cheap. They come tinted as you see in the pic.

Personally i think leaving the area where the reverse and signal bulbs are clear is the way to go. Not a big fan of the full surface tint unless its just a smoke.

I know this thread is super old but does it turn out spotty if you only do 1 coat? Do I need to sand it and then put a clear coat on after?

I've done 1 coat VHT Nighshades and multiple clears with the reverse lens area masked off. Then 1500 grit wet sand, polish and wax. The color turns into a ruby red that's just a bit different but doesn't get the wrong attention. IF you do this you'll need to test the compatability of the clear to the VHT as I had an issue. It was so long ago now I don't recall what clear I used that worked.
