Anyone have problems with ABS Module?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
a buddy of mine has this code for abs module:

18014 - Rough Road/Engine Torque Signal from ABS: Electrical Malfunction
    P1606 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

his abs light is on and brake light flashes.

When it does this he can't vag the car when they key is on, it wont detect the car. It will only vag if the car is off.

If the light goes off, then he can vag the car while running.

I did some research and have seen posts about having to replace abs module,
    clean connections on abs module,
have wiring problems with harness to abs module.
can reset abs module with vag

if anyone could chime in and give comments if they had this problem, and what they did to fix it.

FYI the car is 00 S4 6 speed and does not have esp

oh yeah for sure, I had the blinking ABS and Brake light for 6 months! Mother effer! Then I bought the replacement from www.modulemasters.com and it works like a charm. Highly recommend them.

    edit. I also have a 2000 w.o ESP 6 speed etc.

Re: Anyone have problems with ABS Module?

This is great info! Actually my abs works fine, its for a buddy in MN. He's on vacation this week and I was just checking for him. I'll def let him know about your responses.

So if you take the abs module out, do you have to recode it when putting it in?

I thought maybe we could try putting mine in his car and see if it works.

difference is mine is 01.5 with esp. so I'm thinking it might not work?

    Any idea's on that?

Re: Anyone have problems with ABS Module?

It will most likely... I know that 2000's use Bosch 5.1 ABS. Go to www.modulemasters.com they tell you how to distinguish, where to look on the module for P/Ns

when you install the new one, just have to clear the code in the ABS control module in VAG com and you're all set.

Re: Anyone have problems with ABS Module?

some guy on a BMW M3 forum rebuilt it himself and did a how-to, unless the valves inside have failed, its likeley just the motor's brushes that have failed or become corroded.

Re: Anyone have problems with ABS Module?

Ok one more question. (well one more for now at least )

On that site it says the abs modulator is under the hood. I thought it was the box under the back seat? So is it the part under the hood? I'm guessing that is the right one.

Also it doesnt have an option for S4 but does for S4, I'm assuming the A4 is the same. the abs 5.3 as you stated in your post.

Re: Anyone have problems with ABS Module?

the ABS module is on the driver side of the engine bay behind your driver side headlight.

also, yes, if you are using the site, like for mine the 2000 A4 (bosch 5.3) is what we need. I think that 5.3 is for all years of the s4.

I just sent mine out from my 00 to get rebuilt as well from what I understand the abs module malfunstion is a common problem with our cars. I've had some people tell me its a good idea to do because with the engine toqure codes it engine isnt working proplery.

    no problem

and yeah, it is a good idea to get it fixed because if you nail the brakes at some point they lock up and do not perform as ABS brakes and its scary! lol. take it from me

Re: Anyone have problems with ABS Module?

Ok my next question is :

when his abs light is on and brake light flashing, his vag loses communication with the car. The only way he can get it to work is if he shuts the car off.

when the abs lights shut off (I guess the malfunction lights are on about 75% of the time), then he can run vag when the car is running???

I thought that was strange. Anyone see this happen?

He wants to do some logs in vag and he cant because it wont communicate with car when its running and error lights on.

We tried with two different cables and two different laptops so we know its not the cables and laptops.

Re: Anyone have problems with ABS Module?

yeah, well those are the signs that its going going and eventually gone!....at first it was on cold mornings, then it was every other few days, then it was constant.... it WILL over time become every startup....

thats weird that he loses contact with VAG... when I had the problem, I could still get into VAG the codes would read Rough Road Torque signal ABS blah blah. Are you using real VAGcom cables?

Re: Anyone have problems with ABS Module?

Mine is the cheap ebay vag cables, but I have no problems with my it connecting to my car. maybe its something else too but seamed to be miscommunicate when the abs light came on, plus it did have that abs code.
