cracked wheel repair.

i just got back from picking up a set of sportec mono 10's. i got 4 wheels and 3 tires for $450(great deal huh?). i looked over the wheels but missed an obvious crack a friend pointed out. its about an inch long on the inside of the wheel that had no tire. im almost positive its fixable as the wheel is not bent, its litterally just got a crack. im wondering the process in which a shop uses to fix a cracked wheel? is it like a tranny case where you drill a hole at the end of the crack so it doesnt spread anymore, then weld it? ive done welding before but never anything on a wheel. i may (probably will) end up taking it to a shop, anyone know how much a shop would charge to weld it? thanks guys!

Drill a hole at the end, grind a "v" into the crack and weld. I'd weld it on both sides and the file/sand it smooth on the inside so the tire will seal.

thanks dirty. i was going to weld on both sides anyway if i end up doing it myself.

i had a crack very similar to this in a used set of wheels i bought. it was already welded when I bought them, then cracked again in the same spot. i'm sending it to the scrap yard.....

^glad to hear that. does it matter that its 1 3/4inches long(just measured)? i was reading up and they apparently use tig welding to repair wheels, which i found out is stronger than a mig weld. so i am going to take it to a place near me caller rimpro. some of the guys in my club(aka perfectionists) swear by them so i figure they must be good. hopefully wont be more than $100. gotta get tires now too!

i just took one of my wheels to the shop, about 30 minutes ago. charging me $130 to fix it (same type of crack), kinda pricey but its the best shop around here.

A new Mono 10 (in 19") is about $850-900 as of a couple months ago.

I'd have that one fixed. Ye Olde Wheel Shop in Elkridge, MD, does excellent work and I can vouch for them.

I've had several cracks far worse than that repaired with no additional issues. If you can't find anyone local to fix it, send it to these guys:

They are the only shop that touches my wheels. If they can't fix it, it can't be fixed.

sweet thanks for the replies guys. i took it to a shop this morning and they welded it for me. just got back from picking it up and they did a great job. they sanded down and even primered the inside of the lip so the tire would seat properly. the outside weld is pretty ugly, but its on the inside of the wheel so no biggy. total cost was $75. they said if i wanted it to be straightened it would be $130 total. i opted to just do the weld as the wheel looked pretty damn straight. i guess ill find out when i mount and balance a tire on it.

shop i took it too was rimPRO in tewksbury MA www.rimPRO.com if anyone is in the area i recommend them. ive seen work they did on a guys wheels in my club and they color matched them perfectly to his R32. im thinking of having them touch up some rash on one of the mono 10's over the winter too.

nope theyre not on my car yet. im going stay late at work to try to swap the tires off my OZ's onto these wheels tomorrow night. but anyone whos every tryed mounting a tire on a 19inch wheel knows how fun that is. probably going to take me a couple hours at least.
