About b5 A4 headlights

Hi,
I bought a set of 2000-2002 S4 oem one piece hid headlights and wanted to put them on my 99 A4 avant. But I found that not only the difference in shape (my car has two pieces headlights), the connector is also different. I have no idea what I should do. Should I still try to put them on and find a body shop to do the trimming and wiring works, or should I sell them and find another proper hid headlight kit? Can anyone gives me some advice? Thanks!!

From what I know, you can cut the inside of the fender to fit the lights however I am unsure about the harness. Im sure its on here somewhere, the search button might help

Been talked about quite a few times, and there are good directions on cutting the fenders if you search.

As for the wiring, the best way is to find the newer style plugs that mate with the newer lights and wire them in place of the older round plugs.

Easy to fit.

You'll need to cut / grind down the inner flange that resides behind the 2-piece indicators. Hard to describe, but once you remove the old units, you'll see what metal needs to be removed.

Once you've removed enough for the 1-piece units to fit, you MUST treat the exposed metal with anti-rust. Then, apply primer with a little brush, and when dry, a topcoat in your car's color.

The plugs are easy - simply cut off the old ones, and solder / heatshrink on the new type. Get from a junkyard, should only cost a couple of bucks. The color codes are the same, so, you can't go wrong.

The indicator connectors may be different - mine were. Either use the old ones on the existing connectors, and fit these to the new units.

Or alternatively, use the new ones with the matching plug, spliced to your old harness.

It's so easy, the newer 1-piece units have the levelling motor connectors wired into the same D-shaped connector, rather than the seperate oblong connector of the old one, but the color codes are the same. You'll just end up with one connector per side.

b/c he picked up face lift HID lights, he will need ds2 bulbs, ballasts and wiring for HIDS as well as making them fit, right? Wouldnt it be easier to just get an aftermarket HID kit for the headlights and call it a day?

They would generally come with bulbs and ballasts, if purchased used, never known anyone to gut them pre-sale.

The wiring connector (8-pin) is the same for both HID and non-HID post facelift.

There is a write up you can follow to allocate Siena's response. Click here.. There are a few pictures missing in the write up and a few things that are not needed. You do not need to remove the front bumper. And the pictures missing has the OP of that write up place blue painters tape around the fender where he cut, as to avoid paint damage. You should cut a little peice at first and cut little by little from there. Take your time with it , as you you do not want to overcut. But undercutting is ok, as you can keep cutting it till you get a perfect (or colse to as possible) fit. Other than that, follow what Siena said and you will be alright.

i ended up doing the same mod and it came out lookin pretty good. I would reccommend getting hid's tho. The cutting and everything took me about an hour with a dremel (only cuz im anal like that). The worst part was findin that they use different kinds of plugs tho. Heres the links to the part i had to buy to make it work. If you have any questions/problems just ask, a lot of people have done this mod.

The connectors are pricey. I sold my OEM headlights to an individual a while back and helped him find the connectors (as he too was doing an upgrade). When all was said and done, A&P sold them to him for roughly $24+shipping for all 4 needed connectors. Best deal I could find.
