I have the stock exhuast with the VMR testpipe. It does sound good, and when you are against a wall or something and you move from a stop you can hear the turbo pretty nicely. Bad thing is if I let off the gas at WOT in ie 3rd or 4th, you can hear what sounds lie coins rattling in a can just for second

^^mufflers and resonators off ebay for about $400 total, $200 for the piping from the downpipe back, $120 for the test pipe. still have the stock downpipe. installed the TP myself.

I ran an ER 3-2.5 TP for about 4-5 months before I put on my AWE.
Sound wise it's a littler louder/deeper, but not much at all. I was really surprised that it was pretty much undetectable that the TP was on it. Def get the "no cat" exhaust smell. Turbo spooled up a littler faster, better power under the curve (no proof, just how the car acted) and I noticed a littler less turbo heat-up.

After the AWE, Spool-up is even faster, better mid/top end (for a KO3), alot less engine braking when coasting in gear, a lot less turbo heat-up over stock and the sound is nice. You really can't get a good idea on the sound unless you see it in person. I get drone on the highway at the 50-65mph range (about in the 2-3k rpms range; I'm 5-spd). Over that it disappears and I'll put up with it any day .

How's the tone with this? Will this put strain on the stock mufflers?

I'm looking for a deep mellow tone that isn't too loud, but provides a decent amount of sound around 60-70 mph.

Deep? How about Raspy and annoying? I hate the sound of those vehicles stock. It is so friggen annoying because you hear all this noise and the vehicle isn't going anywhere.

I for one like their sound as well (and it's not because I'm a Nissan fan...mabe that helps a little ). To answer your question if you have a 1.8t...basically no...no way to copy that sound; they have a V6, us a 4 cyl. We have a turbo which really helps out in the sound dept over the other 4 cyl's like honda's/acura's and other ricey cars you see/hear driving around.
I've never heard a 3.0L exhaust that was close to the G35 in sound, but don't have much experience/know many people with them either.

The stock exhaust w/ a tp will def let you donw in the sound dept. You could barely tell anything was different sound wise. It'll put a strain on the TP-DP gasket; most tp's are 3 or 2.5" and the down pipe is less than 2.25 (2.125 i believe). That's a pretty big/drastic step down and I've heard of gaskets failing/blowing out there (mainly on those with a 3" test pipe and stock DP/stock exhaust).

Perhaps the ones I heard had custom exhausts? The one's I heard were pretty quiet... I was behind one driving through the mtns through pigeon forge a few months ago.

Ever heard the MTM exhaust systems on the 1.8T's? They provide a very nice tone for the 1.8's and makes it sound like a V6 in my opinion.. however this system is SO hard to find and very expensive.

Me too, milltek exhaust with milltek's HFC. Very happy, probably the softest noise increase you can get by changing an exhaust and I'm happy with it because imho A4's should be rather quiet..

i love my thermal R&D with the tttuning HFC. haven't had any issues with it yet and it sounds so nice.

this should give you an idea of the sound (last half of the video), but keep in mind that a sound recording is not going to give you the same sound you would hear in person, my exhaust is much deeper in person. the revs were kept low (brought it to 4k i think)

APR Stealth with AWE HFC - I did it for performance (with other mods) versus sound and I'm a little disappointed with the drone from 2600-3K as its right in the middle of cruising speed in 6th on the freeway. Sounds fine on a flat or slight down but as soon as there's an incline and you have to get on the gas a little its really quite intrusive...

oh yes - no complaints there...

I'm not completely disatisfied with the sound either - its great on acceleration above 3k rpm, its just that band between 2600 & 3K where it drones happens to be 75 mph in 6th which is my usual cruising speed on the freeway...

This sounds really good.. I wonder what this sounds like in comparison to the AWE system? I wish someone had it with a sound/video clip. I heard the one on their website doesn't do it justice.

If I get the AWE, would I need to get a test pipe?

    Hey Widgget,

Do you experience any drone with your Thermal R&D?

    I notice I get a prettly loud drone at 2800 - 3200 RPMs.

Any way to reduce this? Add additional resonators?

    Thanks,
    JJ
