    3.0...how do you remove the alternator?

    I'm trying to get to the alternator but it looks buried on the 3.0. It's not on top like the 1.8's have it. How do you get to it? Looks like there isn't even enough space to work with?

    I have changed the alternator on a Passat 2.8 which is probably similar (it's mounted on the bottom left side when you're looking at the motor from the front of the car). I had to remove the bumper and front rack (a/c condenser, radiator, etc). I was no simple job but certainly not the most complicated thing I've ever done. If you feel comfortable removing the front end of your car, its easy but time consuming... probably a five hour job. The most tedious part is getting the damn alternator out of its mounting position, as there was very little room and I had to wiggle it just right to get the clearance.

    A plus to the change is you get to flush your coolant. The downside is that you'll probably get covered in coolant when you drain it.

    That's not good news. I'm going to see if working from below is an option.
