*URGENT* Where is the crankcase breather?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well I am almost done getting rid of all those vacuum lines and check valves and whatnot and am curious to know where is teh crankcase breather?

I am assuming it is the pretty big hole of you look down between the 3rd and 4th intake runners, correct?

Anyways, the second I touched that hose (literally just touched it) it completely fell apart.

    Damnit.

    Correct, under the intake.

You have to take the intake off to get to it.

Re: *URGENT* Where is the crankcase breather?

Martini, thats part of the crankcase breather system....

onceover, thanks for the pic. I was able to get to it with the inatke manifold stil one, but like I said mine is damn broken. I just ordered one from mjmautohaus.com but it probably wont getr here till the end of the week, and I have to go to school monday!!

Quick question, I believe that when I took the breather out, parts of plastic (from whats missing looks like big pieces too) fell into the breather hole...can this be a problem? I figure that if the plastic pieces fall into the oil pan, than the pickup screen will filter them out, so they dont get into the oil pump......what do you think?

There are 2 one under the intake (the hose that broke) and the one on the back of the VC.

Re: *URGENT* Where is the crankcase breather?

What do you guys recommend I can do to temporarily "gerry-rig" up the crankcase breather (the one underneath the intake mani)?

Can I just stick a 1" tube in there until the part that broke gets shipped to me?

    Hmm like this?

Make sure you take the filter housing off before you start the car and remove anything that fell down inside, because I promise you it did!!!

Mine looks just like that..... Funny thing, its seems as though that gold looking piece, seems to be "stuck" in there, plus I know that some pieces have fallen down in there....

How do I take that housing off? (Please dont say remove the oil filter/cooler....because I JUST changed my oil )

bump....still wondering how I can get that housing off. I have taken off 3 (of what looks like) 4 bolts. It seems as though the 4th bolt, is caught behing the oil cooler. Do I have to remove the oilfilter, then cooler?

Remove the oil filter (you dont have to drain your oil, just make sure you have a small amount to add after your done), Remove the large nut (I think its 22 or 24mm), unhook the coolant line at the hardpipe that feeds the oil cooler, slide the oil cooler off ( you will lose a bit of coolant but you can just top it off with water afterwards). This should allow you access to all 4 either 10mm bolts or 5mm allen. Be careful pulling it off, it will be stuck to the block. The gasket is metal so if you are reusing it, be careful not to damage it pulling it off

    /\
Shawn is correct. You don't want to fire up the car with those pieces in there. The pieces could get into the crankcase and bind with your crank bearings or rod bearings. I would also replace the gasket between the block breather assy and the block.

A more permanent solution to your block breather lines is this:

I have one waiting to be installed. Once I get my car back I'll be re-routing all of that to a catch can system. I'm gonna need a big catch can for I might be getting a lot of positive crankcase pressures with my race fuel tune. My 93 tune should be alright.

Re: *URGENT* Where is the crankcase breather?

Thanks Shawn, but I figured it out....hopefully I wont have ny trouble with either the metal gasket or the o-ring for the oil cooler.

Doug, thanks for the link, too bad I didnt know about that yesterday, that would be perfect for me, but I alrwdy bought the damn $50 OEM piece.....damn.

Damn, glad I got the VW one (not because of price but it was differently sized/positioned and worked better for how I have it connected) and only 24 bucks

$50! That sucks. I have an extra one too (I think). It was on the TT engine I took apart.

Re: *URGENT* Where is the crankcase breather?

Yea, I think I might have that place I ordered from give me a refund.

Plus I made this temporarily (seems to be holding great, so I just might keep it or go the route that is posted in the link Doug put up.
