How do you lift your car?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm planning on changing oil this weekend and the only hang-up I have on the entire process is lifting the car up. I've changed oil countless times on other cars but none of them have been so near and dear to me (read: expensive) so I don't want to damage my car just to get it in the air.

My biggest concern is lift points, and what kind of jack to use. I have a floot jack but is not a low profile so I highly doubt its going to fit under there. Anyone ever get it up with the factory jack? Do you guys use jack stands or do you not bother since its up for such a short time?

i have a low pro jack from craftsman, i think i paid around $120 for it. (it's been a godsend) if you had one on each side, behind the front wheel, i'd imagine you could get it far enough up to drain 'er

Do not use the stock jack unless you have a death wish. Buy some ramps for 30 bucks and screw jack points.

If you're going to be underneath the car and choose to use a hydraulic jack, make sure you also have jack stands.

Even a "good" Sears jack isn't that good..and definitely not worth the risk.

    Like this...

Floor jack and jack stands. If you look under the car you will see lift points. You should be fine without a low profile jack, the S4 is hardly low.

Also make sure you use jackstands with rhino ramps also.. they are liable to break.

Re: How do you lift your car?

When you get your jack look for one of these:

The grooves are there so you don't ruin the body seam that runs down the length of the car. This one is from purems http://www.purems.com/products/product.php/II=833

They also sell pads for the jack stands.

I use ramps when I don't need to remove the wheels, but for things like tire rotation and brakes I bust out the floor jack and stands with pads.

The silver Rhino Ramps have a higher capacity then the black Rhino's
but a jack is a good idea. Better safe then sorry.

Re: How do you lift your car?

always use jack stand under a car even if u only do sumthin quick like oil change, a couple extra min goin out to get them could save your life. i have just started workin in the field and have herd way to many stories to ever get under a car for even a min without jack stands or extra support....

He's talking about your shitty TJ wheels. Those things are hideous! lol

Actually I didn't understand it either as they are some of the best looking and best wheels on the market. I love Champions.

Also, you really don't ned jackstands with the Rhino ramps as they aren't going to break. If they were susceptible to breaking, Rhino would probably be out of business from lawsuits.
