    skool me on brakes

sup guys, im looking into changing out my brake pads, i have no intention of doing a bbk, as i think the stock brakes stop the car fine. However like all german cars, i cant stand the brake dust.

What pad are you guys running? and where did you purchase them from?

I also plan on doing stainless steel lines and changing out the fluid.

Hawk HPS... from www.tirerack.com. Whoops, don't see them on there... they only list ATE.

Hit up ECStuning for a set:

I like Performance Friction Carbon Metallic.

Whatever you do, do not put ceramic pads on your car. They are known to dust less but at the expense of not being able to carry as much heat thereby transferring it to your rotors and warping them. They don't stop the car as well either.

My experience with ceramic pads was that they eat up the rotors…

How do these compare to stockers? Supposedly quiet and less dusty.
Stop any better? I think stock ones are terrible when it come to stopping power.

    What about EBC Red Stuff?

    Re: skool me on brakes

I never liked the ebc stuff. did the reds a while back and didn't like them at all.

the performance friction don't stop well out of the garage but anything after the first application is awesome. they grab like there is no tomorrow. if you get them from autozone they will continually replace them for life. I have taken somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 to 6 sets back for replacement . they will give you a new set as long as the rivets are not visible. it's the greatest deal as future brake changes will only cost u 16 bucks for rotor turning.

    Re: skool me on brakes

eddieman loves them, but I haven't tried them yet. I'm due for my third set of pads in a few months and was actually looking at putting on a set of the ECS floating rotors (stock size) and am still researching pads.

Does the brake sensor work with the performance friction pads?

    Re: skool me on brakes

Pads: Carbotech Bobcats (ceramic = no dust) http://www.ctbrakes.com/
Fluid: Motul RBF 600. ATE is good also.
    Lines: Goodridge

If you switch from the OE metal-base pads to ceramics, you should also change your rotors.

This setup is all you need for even light track work. BBK is mostly for bling or for serious track work.

I too am due for a front brake change. I was quoted $540 out the door. I think the breakdown was as follows:
    •Pads: $132
    •Rotors $125 each
And I assume the rest of it is labor/tax.

Is it safe to assume that it makes more sense to stray away from OEM and go aftermarket?

Are your rotors warped? Why are they turning (assuming they can be turned) / replacing them?

    Re: skool me on brakes

The car went into the dealer for an oil change and I had them check everything out. My mechanic, who I trust and lets me into the service area to check things out, said the pads were getting close to the sensors tolerance (the light will come on soon). I checked things out for myself and seemed to agree compared to a new pad. I thought our rotors were not able to be turned.

Almost any rotor can be turned.

Charles, I have never had them but am still going to suggest that you don't do the ECS rotors. The metals that are used in these rotors are not as good as say a Powerslot rotor. Powerslot make a damn good rotor. check out their site and decide for yourself. Couple their rotor with a nice cryo treatment and you've got yourself a great rotor that isn't going to warp. Mine look as good as the day that i installed them and there are no signs of rust inside the vanes or around the hub.

I've had good luck with Powerslot rotors in the past. So ECS uses a cheaper material - good to know for the second most important part of our cars!

raudi has me sold on the performance friction pads, now the debate over keeping the stock rotors or going with a powerslot or an ate rotor is up next

Unless they have recently (within the last 2 months) come out with something new, Hawk does not make a front pad for the S4 that will accept stock or aftermarket spring clips. Just thought I would mention it.
