Is Up Shifting w/out Clutch Bad?

I've heard from a few different people that you shift up to a higher gear w/out the clutch as long as the engine is at a higher RPM in the lower gear than you will need in the higher gear. Is that bad for the transmission, even if its done right?

I know this may look like a stupid question....

Re: Is Up Shifting w/out Clutch Bad?

Ive done it, on a fwd car, but i mean i wouldnt be doin it with no audi. Specially a Quattro.. It could turn bad... gettin it out of gear would be eazy but matchin that syncro would be a lil harder and if your jamin the thing... then youll har some grindage...

But ive done it, goin about 80 with the revs up... Im guessin over time it will screw the tranny over. Grind the syncros down... i wouldnt be doin it.. Inless you have some high powered rocket and time matters

My step dad used to do this in his Rodeo, aka speed shifting, and no it isn't a good idea.

Probably not a good idea on a car with synchro trans. Its fine to do this on a car with a competition gear box with straight cut gears.

Re: Is Up Shifting w/out Clutch Bad?

If you match the engine speed and transmission speed, you can do this upshift without any damage to your syncros. The problem is, it's not something just anyone can do - it take practice and until you are good at it, it will put accelerated wear on your syncos.

Re: Is Up Shifting w/out Clutch Bad?

I've tried it. It comes out of gear easily. The hard part is getting it to fall into gear. There's is only a split deco d where it will go. If you miss...it grinds
