Question Sway bars... Question for u who have them!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok so today I noticed that ya my 3.0 w/ sport pkg is great in turns, but I still feel a bit of body roll... Like I feel the car lean into the turns... Not a lot, but enough for me to notice. If I were to install a sway bar in the front, would that like take up alot of engine compartment space?? (I have seen M3's, civics, etc that have a thick metal bar from the left shock to the right shock, and to mess/mod/repair the engine you have to remove that bar... pain in the a**)

Also for the rear... Is there anything for the rear? if so how is that installed?? Do I lose trunk space..? Do I have to cut into my trunk?? Please enlighten me! lol...

The sway bars go underneath the car, they link the suspension together. If you want a tighter ride, I highly recommend Hotchkis (H-Sport) S4 sway bars for the front and rear. It'll give you tighter handling and in my opinion, balance out the suspension as well.

look in the group buy section you can get a RS4 rear sway bar for 125 i belive and it makes a huge difference as for the front, sport package is the best you can do (i think) but the rs4 rear will make a huge difference and you will feel it its a direct replacement its 24mm as compared to your 18 sport package

Here's my install of the rear sway... but I'd agree with Delux that the H-Sport option is probably a better idea if the price tag doesn't scare you off.

well you shouldn't change your front because you dont need to. and i only changed my rear and its easy to do. you shouldn't have any problems just changing one (thats what i and most do)

Re: Sway bars... Question for u who have them!

Yeah, they're not cheap. That's mostly why I went with the RS4 rear sway only. There's been much debate as to weather adding a front sway is necessary... seems to be more of a matter of personal preference. I'm leaning towards it now as I'd like my front end planted a bit more going into turns. Might just pick up the H & R Front bar or just ditch the RS4 sway and pick up the H-Sport kit.

If you're gonna go H-Sport, try Pure MS. Always good to support the Tuning Community... and who knows, maybe they'll cut you a deal.

RS4 rear sway is 22mm, not 24mm. The H-Sport S4 rear sway though is 24mm. Btw I just put on my RS4 rear sway on Monday and in terms of body roll the handling is much improved .

+1. all those bars that you see are strut tower braces/bars. they do a very good job of tightening up the front, but i have a rear sway and i love it. i think its enough, and dont see a reason for anything more.

maybe in the future if i go hardcore it will change, but otherwise, its completely sufficient.

Re: Sway bars... Question for u who have them!

what you're talking about are strut tower bars. your car should already have one built in. its kinda hidden (front).

sways go on the bottom of the car. they take under an hour to install the rear, and a lil over an hour for the fronts.

many people will just do a rear. you should really be doing this in tandem. but if you were to just do one. it would be the rear. but you should REALLY do both the front and rear and not just one. you're not gonna want one half of your car to be sorta leaning, while the other half is leaning a lot.

the plus for the h-sport, they are thicker, have more sway control, are probably lighter, and should ride better, as they are hollow.

i have the s4 h-sports, i bought them when the rs4 wasn't out yet. i would never install just a rear.

Re: Sway bars... Question for u who have them!

I've the rs4 rear only and I noticed a HUGE difference handling whit it only. I stronly suggest to you to beggin whit this mod and see how you like the car whit it. For the cheap cost of the kit I strongly recommande it. IMO Strut brace are not a good deal until you have a very stiff race suspension and going to the track... they are a subtle upgrade because it-s a chasis upgrade and not a direct part of the suspension... also our car has a very stiff chasis... so you shoul start with rs4 rear sway and after coilover... forget those strut brace for a while...

The RS4 rear bar isn't going to work on his car. The car is a FrontTrak car. It utilizes a beam axle rear suspension setup.

Look for a used set of H-Sport sways. I picked mine up used from somebody that parted out (5k miles on them) for $200. The H-Sport S4 sways have two stiffness settings also in the back and set to the stiffest setting it is a big difference between it and the OEM RS4 bar. I wouldn't do just a rear either.

Re: Sway bars... Question for u who have them!

The front sway bar is the same on the A4 sport package as the S4 and RS4. Therefore.. no need to change the front. The rear is the one that's diff. Find the A4 ultimate modification thread (search) and it gives you all the thickness differences.. Best bang for your buck is RS4 (it's thick enough for the daily driver) and is simple to install..

but I still cant see what my options are since I own the 3.0 with FWD... Audioso said it dont work with the rear.. What can I do??

Can I still goto like my dealer, or group buy, and pick up the RS4 sway bar right?? The front I think ill leave the same.. and the rear for $150 sounds "do-able" lol

Usually driving a super car is like manhandling a piano up a flight of stairs! , but the R8 is like smearing honey into keira knightley "Clarkson"

Re: Sway bars... Question for u who have them!

i know that the h-sports will work for an AWD or a frontrack. not sure about the OE RS4, but it seems odd that it would not work.

and the magnaflows should not be in your way. the bars are just fatter, not WAY fatter, nor a different shape.

as for the fronts all being the same, I don't know for certain, but that seems in-accurate to me.

Stick with just changing the rear for now. I have a FWD with a S4 rear bar and its improved from the stock setup. Yea hit up PureMS, they are very knowledgable. Actually my car is there now.

Re: Sway bars... Question for u who have them!

Ok so I ordered it!! According to UPS the sway will be here on Friday!!!! So that is a perfect weekend project!! ill make sure to make a DIY for all interested! Also, how do you disconnect the exhaust system to be able to access the sway bar?? I had Maggs put on it, so would it be harder? Are there bolts in the exhaust I need to remove?? Or do I have to cut and weld... AHHH

IIRC I think STaSIS advises to use the stock front sway with their SL and MS kits. I have not tried that, but just something to think about.
