That's about all that should happen.

I've done it numerous times. It's easier to just fill 'er up while it's running instead of opening the door/window to access the glove box and turn the turbo timer off. Only reason is bugs me is that my car is loud, and people look at me funny for not turning my car off when the pump says to.

If you ever want to steal my car though, if I go inside to pay I normally leave my keys in the ignition. I could use a newer car...

a loose gas-cap constitutes a break in the evaporative emissions control, so it throws a CEL, normally.. you should be able to refuel in time before this trips the light as it can correct itself in the pending cel list the ECU has.

I've never put gas in a running car. Never saw a reason to.

Why? You around in NJ this Saturday? I'm dropping my Avant off at ASP. Would love to see your car. I'll PM you my number.

I did it once. When I fired up the new 2.0. Got a nice funny light [I've never seen before] on the dash saying my gas cap was off the car.

I usually shut the car off because I check the engine oil level every time I fill up the gas tank.

    Re: refueling with engine runnign

A friend of mine had her car stolen from a gas station while it was running but not at the pumps... I would never leave the car running if I wasn't in it or putting gas in it. I do however fill her up all the time while the car is running with no issues. The warning on the pumps to shut your car off is an old law incase of explosions and what not, I find it very hard to believe that a normal running car could attribute to such an explosion. However some fool trying to steal your car while you are filling up and driving away with the pump still attached could cause some issues... :(

    Re: refueling with engine runnign

I've never seen any reason to fuel up, with my engine running.

Only reason anyone would have to do so, is if they have a starting problem, either a bad starter motor, or battery.

The turbo timer, aircon issues are pretty lame excuses.

Besides, not sure about the United States, but here in the UK, if your car's stolen off a gas forecourt, or any other place, and it was discovered you had the key in the ignition, running or not, insurance won't pay out.

You'd be well and truly stuffed then!

The turbo timer is a lame excuse, I know. I just hate having to reach into the glove box every time I get fuel to turn it off. It is hooked up to the parking brake, so I could just release and reset it to make it stall.

as far as insurance goes, the keys were on top of the sunroof, or on the seat. I would Never leave the keys in the ignition. ... insurance companies like me, I get my story straight the first time.

It's not recommended, it may be illegal, or something on the fringe. It's a safety concern and possibly a hazard to everyone's health. If you car misfires, in theory it could cause a spark and an explosion.

mmhm.. yea i dunno about that one cuz i know when your changing the fuel filter you should allways remove the gas cap so when you take the filter off it doesnt spray your. so i think it might have soemthing to do with the pressure.. probably no negitive affects though.

The pressure differential between the atmosphere and the inside of the tank is what pushes fuel out. If you open the fuel cap the pressure is equal on both sides. The most fuel you should lose at that point is what's in the line and above the connection you're working on.

If the EVAP system operates correctly there should be a slight vacuum in the fuel tank. This removes the fuel vapors and recircs them into the intake to decrease emissions.
