    Question Protective Tape

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm planning a drive out to vegas with my car in a couple weeks and wanted to get some insight on how I can give my front end a little protection. I've been recommended by some friends to tape the front end using tape (some type of blue type used in auto -x and road racing).

Can you guys help me out? Last time I drove to vegas I got a little ding on the bottom of the bumper, which could have been easily avoided if I did this.

    Thanks again -

    Re: Protective Tape

Its the painters tape that can be bought at Lowes, HD, etc.

Spend some time cleaning the car up then go to town.

this tape doesn't hurt the paint when I peel it off right? I'm assuming it should be fine...some clarification would be great

It won't hurt the paint at all, just make sure to clean the car before you put it on

    Re: Protective Tape

I recently bought a C4, and I used Painters tape for the front bumper, mirrors and other stuff [427, V-tec, etc]. I drove from Indiana to Pittsburgh with it on, no problems. It peeled off easy without any residue.

I heard you can also spray pam on the car to protect it from bugs? Could someone confirm this?

    Re: Protective Tape

Here's my knock off of the original. The first time I saw it was on a B5 S4 that others have mentioned. I think it's a huge thread on VWVortex.

For the most part it survived the drive from Houston to LA and back. You'll want to wash the car before putting it on and then give it a really good washing after taking it off. There might be some residue left from the tape and dirt in any of the places where the tape started to come off.

once you get it in your hands it will be easier to understand, it's sticky enough to stay on but not so sticky that it'll take something with it, it's specially made to do this so it works.

    Re: Protective Tape

    enigma1406: HOLY COW NICE WORK.

yep the painters tape comes off pretty easily, there might be one or two spots where the tape will leave residue, you'll be able to see/feel it and just wipe it off. I used the quick detailer, not the full wax paste, after I took mine off.

This was just last week when I drove the car back from chicago:

That's how I did it as well. I managed to find a small piece of blue tape under my window trim like 6 months later though It's probably because I took the stuff of as fast as I could. Looked like a blue tape monster exploded in the garage.

    Re: Protective Tape

i rode 8 1/2 hours home in the hot sun [90* temps] and there was no residue, but the fact that it's fiberglass instead of metal may have helped.
