A4 Dream -- Audis like any other cars will need some TLC when they start to age and parts begin to wear. I’ve been some of the normal wear and tear on my car. It cost money to fix, some big issues you’ll run into are:

    Timing Belts $$$$$ (5 $ = 1000-1500 )
    Wheel Bearings $$$$
    Clutch $$$$$
    Turbo $$$$$
    Tie Rods $$
    Brakes $$
    Vacuum Leaks $
    LCD Display…. $

Aside from that I love my Audi, it reliable and dependable and lots of fun to drive

    -valve cover gasket
    -lcd was shot
    -motor mounts
    -brakes
    ..nothing major in my eyes
    My current 2001 with 101k
    -upper control arms
    -tie-rod end
    -valve cover gasket
    -brakes

    Re: Problems with b5 A4?

If you know how to work on cars, you will be able to save a LOT of money as far as basic maintenance goes. my b5 is t 109k and its running strong, recent swaps have been timing belt, clutch, brakes. I just got the car and am planning on replacing the control arms and wheel bearings when I get my coilovers in a couple of months. treat your car well and the car will do the same to you. Don't thrash it.

    Re: Problems with b5 A4?

you will have a problem removing your ass from the driver's seat.

my car has been running strong since i bought it. maintenance wise, i've replaced the N75 and changed the oil, but that's about it for the engine. i also have bought tires but that doesn't really count. oh yeah and the previous owner said he did the front control arms about 9000 miles ago but they are starting to clunk at low speeds. i might just need to re-torque them.

other than that, i completely trust my car to get me anywhere. it's a 99 but it's more solid than some of the brand new cars i have driven.

    Re: Problems with b5 A4?

Yeah man Cuz I had an 85 gti and a 2000 bmw 328i and they both were money pits. I dont even care though. They are amazing cars. The one im looking at getting is a 2.8 so its not the turbo.. are both the engines prone to having the same problems?

    Re: Problems with b5 A4?

2.8s are probably slightly more reliable, simply because its NA. What year is the one you're looking at?

The car I own now has a little clunk at low speeds too.
There was about 3k dropped into tires suspension/handling in my car only a couple years ago. maybe less. You think they just need to be retorqued? Ive never had to do that... how much work is it?

96 is a 12 year old car with 160k on the clock man. That could be a money pit so expect to pay at random times.

    Re: Problems with b5 A4?

I think we all forgot about one thing...SLUDGE

I picked my 2000 A4 1.8t up with 122,000 miles and the previous owner did not take care of it and i got sludge which toasted my crank, cams, valves, and everything else only 4 months later. I am currently having it rebuilt but even if YOU take care of the car just make sure the dude before you did as well.

thats only on the 1.8T's that the sludge happends

    Re: Problems with b5 A4?

my 99.5 has 172k on it. bought it a 167k but it was meticulously maintained.. but right now it needs a headlight switch cause the headlights, every so often will shut off at night, turn the switch off, back on and they turn back on... and when i hit my keyless, my pass side marker lights will flash and then stay solid, meaning i need a new hazard switch/relay.

that's all that is wrong with my car.

    Re: Problems with b5 A4?

Ok I went and looked at a 96 2.8 quattro today. Everything was good... But the boot by the cv joints is ripped... supposedly its just to block dust? what is it?

    Re: Problems with b5 A4?

It is there to protect gunk from getting at the cv joints which will lead to replacement of both joint and boot. One could save themselves the trouble by just replacing the boot before it becomes a major factor.

    Re: Problems with b5 A4?

The boot is cheap, like $20 check purems or ecstuning they should have it. If they cv is still good thats all you'll need. If the cv is shot they sell cv joint kits too but it is easier just to replace the whole axle, about $120ish. Both jobs imho are easy to do and can be done with ease if you are at all mechanically inclined. Also check out audidiy.com they have a cv boot replacement diy on there.

    Re: Problems with b5 A4?

Yeah man thats what I have been hearing. The car that the boot is ripped on was takin to the Audi dealer ship for a pre buyers inspection and thats the only thing they found wrong with it. Its a 96 with only 92k miles! The dealership is only asking 3795 cuz there is slight body damage I can fix my self..
