Help me diagnose a bad axle =(

On the way to work I was crusing about 30mph into a corner and all of a sudden i had a thud. I though I hit a rock or something and my bumper was dragging. I was about a mile from work so I just kept going. The dragging sound went away...but I noticed had a vibration now...but ONLY when in 2nd or 3rd gear when i'm cruising...push in the clutch, and let the clutch back out and the rpms come up as the clutch grabs and i get a ton of vibrations and then its fine. It does not do it taking off from a stop in 1st or second gear and i'm not grinding any gears...does this sound like a bad axle? When clunk first happened it would only make a dragging/vibration noise on decelleration.

If its a bad axle you should only hear knocks while turning not while going in a straight line.

^^that wud be a cv joint clunking on turns. Have you looked at it? Possibly a problem where it connects to the drive flange on the trans? Really a guess, sounds like one strange problem.

sounds like a control arm to me. mainly because it happened while turning which would put more stress on them and would give you the vibration if there are horribly wrong. a cv would only give off sounds or vibration when turning. my 2 pennies

Its not control arms. There is no clunking going over bumps. The car drivers perfectly, except when I'm cruising down the road and press the clutch in. Then when the revs come down to idle I let the clutch back out. As the clutch is grabbing i get a ton of vibrations on the passenger side. Then it goes away. No sounds on deccel or acceleration from a stop. No grinding gears. Shifts fine. I don't think its the clutch since there is no noise on take off.

That's a hard one to diag over the internet.

Check out the drivetrain, could be the center support bearing for the drive shaft finally died, or something else weird.

I want to say check the engine mounts, but that really wouldn't make sense for the situation.

those center bearings go bad? I should have a new axle tomorrow. My current one has a bad boot and exploded all over my wheels. This is why i suspected the axle.

FWIW when I busted my rear axles like a mofo they made a similar issue. I doubt that you could have done the same amount of damage without ample warning.

I busted the ball cage inbetween the inner and outer halves of the CV joint.

They don't go bad real often, it's actually pretty rare, but you'll know right away of that's it. Pull the heat shield off and grab/jiggle your shaft. ... LOL... if that bearing is play in it, or it makes noise it should be replaced. There is a bushing around that bearing as well. Take a good look at it. It should take no more than 3-4mins to look at if you have it up in the air to do the axle.

It would take a bit more stress than rain to do the damage I did.
