    Painting Interior Trim, help!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok so first off, don't tell me I should try searching because I have and nothing really has any step-by-step diy for this that I have found.

Anyway, I want to change the color of my interior trim and want to avoid spending 150+ for a trim kit that's basically just a sticker that goes over the current trim.

So that really leaves me with one option... paint. I've done some painting before (calipers, grill, random other stuff) so I know the basics and I am not too bad with a can. I am just unsure as to the steps for this. Should I said, should I prime, what kind of paint... etc.

Also, I am looking to get the "Piano Black" glossy look if that helps at all.

    Thanks.

Use Krylon Fusion paint for plastic, no prep work at all.

    Re: Painting Interior Trim, help!

Pretty much from what I have looked up and done before I am planning on doing this...

Just strip it down with isopropyl alcohol + sponge + wet sanding. Im going to use a light coat of flexible surface primer because I am using Krylon Fusion Gloss Black (designed to stick to plastics, and a light coat will not hurt just to make 100% sure that it will). Probably 4-5 coats of that followed by another 4-5 coats of clear and let dry over night. I will post pics when it is finished for some opinions.

if you clear coat heavily you might have to do some wet sanding and buffing afterwards.

Yea the clear coating is kind of going to be a wing-it part where I will just apply even coats until I am satisfied with the result.

    Re: Painting Interior Trim, help!

I actually painted my piano trim silver to match the exterior of my a4. Here is what I did.
    1. Scuff the trim with a light grit sand paper, just enough to scuff the trim.
    2. Clean the trim thoroughly and make sure to get all the dust off.
    3. Next mask the quattro badge off perfectly. Use a razor to ensure it is indeed perfect.
    4. Buy duplicolor silver trim paint or whatever color you prefer.
    5. Simply paint it with several light coats and clear.
    6. wait til next day to remove masking tape and begin installation.
    7. Wet sand clear coat.
I was very weary about doing this but in the end it turned out magnificent. Really! Any questions pm me and if you need pics I think I can figure it out and post them. Oh and search on here to see how to remove the trim. There is a phenomenal write up on how to do so. Hope this helps and good luck.

Looks like they just went right over the "quattro" badge.

I have beige interior with the aluminum fishscale trim and I painted it gloss black.

Looks great and I love it!
