    Xenon Interior Pics

Just finished putting in the xenon 18pc kit.
Had two bulbs left over and realized it included license plate bulbs.
My mistake, the two bulbs I thought were for the plate were for the vanity lights that come on with the visor. They are the same size though.

One small fitment issue with the dome light bulbs, the kit came with 4 of the bullet style bulbs, all the same size. The ones in the dome light are longer than what the kit came with, I bent the contact tab in just a bit and put the bulb in at a slight angle, it fit ok and makes solid contact. They are the correct size for the license plate though.

In short, it looks amazing. The xenon lights the aluminum trim up beautifully. Only thing I could pick at is that it doesn't light up the floorboards as well as the original bulbs, but its good enough and I wouldn't call it a complaint by any means.

    Installation tips:

    - The two panels for the front and rear reading lights pops entirely out, don't try to pry out the small lenses. Also, the main dome light is easier to pop out with the reading light panel out. I started with the dome light and then moved on to the front reading lights and realized it would have been easier getting the dome panel out doing it the other way around.

    - The light fixtures for the 4 floorboard, 4 doors, and the glove box are all the same, some were easy to pop out and others hard. They pry out from one side and then slide out down and toward the popped out side.

    - I did this at night because I'm impatient and just got my car back from the shop. I would recommend doing it during the day, leave your doors open until the lights time out, it gets annoying trying to pull hot bulbs. Instant gratification though, doing it at night.

I shot these all with the same white balance setting, it looks pretty much like the real deal color wise in the photos. Pardon the blur.

    Not bad at all.

I'm curious to know what's the name of the kit and where'd you get it.

Also, are the bulbs the same wattage or higher? I'm always worried about putting in bulbs that are higher than OEM wattage because it'll melt whatever housings they are put in or it'll fry the wiring.

Sorry, forgot to put that in there. This was originally in the license plate bulb thread, I started a new one so it would be easier to find in a search.

I actually don't know, but I'll be keeping close watch on it for the next few weeks and if I have any issues I will certainly update the post and anyone who commented in it. I would hate for anyone to follow my lead and have any issues down the road. (pun intended)

Hey dude, I am going to order these soon. These pics look awesome. Also do all the lights pop out like the side markers or do I need a flat head screw driver?

I used a small flathead for everything except the license plate bulbs. That needs a small phillips. For the dome and rear reading lights just slip it under one side and slide it over to the opposite side, it will come right out. All of the other fixtures are pretty much the same, one side can be pryed out the other cant. You'll see what I mean. There is a little mark on the side that can be pryed out.

Am I spelling pryed correctly? I hate looking like an embusil.

Did the same upgrade about a year ago. Probably one my favorite mods. Since the upgrade I only had one bulb burnout and a customer service rep sent me out a replacement bulb with no questions asked.

    OP: That looks awesome!
Did you think about putting red LEDs for the floor lights? I think the xenon/red combo would look even better!

Btw, what are the differences between LEDs and Xenons for interior lights and which do you think is better?

Not hating on the OP here but once I noticed this comment I had to say it....the LEDs are 10x better than the "Xenon" bulb kits. I went this same route about a year and a half ago and it looked cool for a while but the bulbs started burning out one by one. Of course the problem here is that if it burns out you have to order new ones that match and by that time you might as well buy another set due to shipping, etc. My suggestion would be to go ahead and replace the overhead lights with hyper white LEDs, those will be the first bulbs to go. It will be expensive to do the rest but I keep buying a couple here and there for when the "Xenon" bulbs burn out. My $.02....

I replaced some of the bulbs on my B5 with LED festoon bulbs from this place...and they worked well.

    Re: Xenon Interior Pics

Not to be a total dick here but those bulbs are not "xenon," they are just a higher kelvin color temperature output than standard bulbs. I figure it is best for you all to use the proper terminology. Xenon gas will not ignite unless under extremely high pressure and electrically charged so there is no "xenon" about the bulb.

The bulb manufacturers mix different gasses to produce different colors (high quality bulbs) or they paint the glass with a coating to filter certain wavelengths of light to produce the desired color (lower quality bulbs).

    Re: Xenon Interior Pics

these are actually xenon colored bulbs, correct? xenon refers to the gas used in bulbs used with HID's. the gas naturally gives off the clean white/blue color that everyone loves. xenon gas needs a higher voltage "spark" to ignite (or excite) the gas... hence the need for a ballast for those xenon lighting kits.

this "xenon" kit seem to use incandescent bulbs with the blue coloring to mimic the xenon color. i say this because i noticed the bulbs pictured on the site were colored blue, and there was no mention of any ballasts.

these bulbs have a few advantages. first, the price (cheaper than real xenons/LEDs). and they should use the same wattage as the original bulb (since both are incandescent), so you shouldn't get any bulb out warnings. the disadvantages are that they don't last nearly as long as LEDs. they'll burn out more frequently. and because of the blue coloring, they may run hotter, so you may want to keep a close eye on them.

oh, and make sure you don't get any fingerprints or any other oils/liquids on the bulbs. it will cause the bulb to run hotter, and burn out quicker.

    Re: Xenon Interior Pics

Correct- they are not actually Xenon.

The kit is called an interior xenon kit, but should more accurately be called a xenon 'look' kit. I apologize if that mislead anyone. I suspect it does run a bit hotter because of the color on the glass. The only bulbs I'm concerned about are the license plate bulbs because they are on more often. The interior lights are on for such short periods of time, for me it's not as risky as the city light melting issues.

That said, it doesn't take long for them to get to full temperature. I won't be completely comfortable with it until I've had them in for a few months.

If anyone does this and sees any signs of melting or discoloring on the lenses, please give us a heads up.

+124235235 to the person that said LED's are better

no knock on the OP, great pictures/comparison

i originally got one of these "xenon-look" halogen bulb kits but did not like how hot they got, the comparative brightness, and the blue tint that shows through the lens cover in the daytime.

the LEDs i purchased and used are flawless, BRIGHT and crisp, and generate almost no heat. i've had them for over a year w/ absolutely no issues. the remaining "xenon-look" halogen bulbs i left in the rear footwells are noticeably dimmer andhotter

in short, for the interior, LEDs > "xenon" halogen kits

oh, and NO BULB OUT warnings with INTERIOR LED's

I've now updated my 'trunk' lighting (we call it a boot over here!)

All I've done it added a couple of spare led bulbs I had, but check out the light output on the drive......

Next up - replacement 'white' led numberplate lamps.....
