what should my tire pressure be for 235/40/18?....

my buddy told me that a way to find the right amount was to take chalk and mark the bottom side of the tire, and if the chalk erased evenly i was good...

    so any help....

same psi as the stock tires. the size of the tires doesn't alter the pressure inside the tire.

more tires tell you the maximum psi .. not the right psi for your current car.

It's on your doorjamb. Go drive normally, and feel the tire. If the outside is hot, you need more pressure. If the center is hot, you need less. If it's all evenly warm, you're right on.

    Re: Tire Pressure ...Chalk test?

the chaulk test is solid but you need the right chaulk. you need the kind that is made for a chaulk line (construction stuff) you can find it at home depot. its usually blue and about 5 bucks for a bottle.

now keep in mind this test is crazy old school, i seriously havent heard anyone mention it since i was a kid and my dad was setting up cars.

anyway, you need to rub it all around the tires, each one. doesnt need to be on heavy. basically the entore tread surface should be blue. then you drive a little bit, make a few turns, seriously less than like a half mile. the wear pattern of the chaulk not only can show the under or over inflation as stated above (middle more worn = over, sides = under) but also help dial in camber.

but seriously that is so old school, that what temp probes are for. i shit you not I havent seen this done since probably '88 or '89 and that was in a pinch at the track.

If it's not on your door jam it will be in your gas door (where mine is). I've heard sometimes they're in the spare wheel well. Car makers design their suspension systems for tires with certain PSI. I think it's usually around 35 psi but double check with the car. The rating on the tire is the maximum.

My car is a 2000 and says 34 psi up front and 36 psi in the rear (or the other way around I don't remember).
