Ok guys and girls, it's H2O time and I'm taking it upon myself to gauge some interest on a Saturday morning Cruise down the Garden State Parkway to the Capemay/Lewes Ferry. It knocks off quite a few miles by taking this route in most cases. I'm going to check out the map and look at the different rest areas from me south (approx. exit 100 rest area) and see what the interest is along that stretch. From that point on, I'll try and figure out the meeting times and ferry times so we can get there on time and hopefully make it for the beginning of the bbq. http://www.mapquest.com/mq/5-4RqqY3vRtaHF Here's a map and directions from where I'm coming from. Just north of where these directions enter the Parkway is the Rest Area I mentioned above. It's a pretty good meet spot because it's just after where the express and local lanes on the parkway merge back into one as well as convenient for people traveling south on rt 18 or east off of 195/138. I'll keep everyone posted and leave your name and where you'll be coming from so I can update a list of people and reasonable times to meet so we make it on time. Also as the list grows I'll want to set up pm's for us to trade names and numbers so we can keep in touch incase anyone is running late or strays from the pack on the trip south. I will be bringing my camera as well for some photo ops on the way down and on the ferry ride. I also spoke with the guys from Project Euros and I believe a few will be cruising down Saturday as well. So there might be some dub guys that would join us for the trip. If anyone was with us on Sunday of Waterfest you will remember them as the club that sat with us at the tents. Enough rambling.. Post up!!!
well the ferry might be a little pricey..
It's 34 a car+driver
or 144 for 6 cars (24 car and driver)
9.50 a passenger or 42 for 6 (7 bux a passenger.)
If we get a group in multiples of 6 we can get some savings. If no one is down for this trip and want to go the round about way down the turnpike let me know and we can rethink the meeting spots. I still gotta figure out the travel distance differences between the two routes.
Ok, here's the deal:
I'm figuring from the Monmouth Service Area on the GSP. (between exits 100-98) mapquest states it's approximately an hour and 45 minutes to get to the ferry so figure two hours to be safe.
There are two ferries worth looking at for that morning. a 7:30 or a 9:30am ferry. I don't know about you but 9:30 sounds good for my tired ass.
So if there is 2 hrs travel and figure 30 min to meet, if we leave the Monmouth rest area by 7 we should be ok.
On that note, there are many other service areas along the parkway. each being between 22-30 miles from eachother. Here's a list
Cheesequake service area (just north of exit 120)
Monmouth Service Area (between 100&98)
Forked River Service Area (between exit 77&74)
Atlantic City Service Area (between exit 44&40)
Ocean View Service Area (between exit 20&17)
and Lewes Ferry is located just outside exit 0 I guess you could say.
From looking at that list, let me know what's convenient for you guys as far as meeting points and we can add say 15 min to travel time per checkpoint. If no one is interested at meeting at a certain rest area, we just blow by that one on our way south. Once we get a list of who's going and where they wanna meet, we can nail down some times and figure out pricing for the ferry, I believe a pre order in multiples of 6 will get us cheaper rates, and remember, passengers don't have to go for a free ride. It's a few bucks additional per passenger so get their asses to chip in on the total cost of the ferry and it's not that bad. From my house, the ferry knocks off about 50 miles and avoids turnpike tolls and delaware memorial bridge tolls. so there's a savings of tolls, gas, and time right there. When we get to lewes delaware, we are 34 miles from ocean city and we have a straight shot down the coast from there. mapquest allots 58 min from the ferry to ocean city so I guess the speeds around 45 through there. Anyway, it's a time savings, mileage savings and toll avoider. Also a cool way to hang out with some people before we make it to the show. Big Ass BBQ starts at noon and most check ins are after 3pm for the hotels so we won't be going to the hotel before the bbq. The 930 ferry gets to lewes delaware at 1050 and if it actually takes us an hour to get to ocean city, we are getting there just about the time the bbq will be starting.
There's the info for the ferry if anyone is interested in seeing the pricing and times I'm talking about. http://www.capemaylewesferry.com/
