    buying a RS6.. some questions...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey, I'm very interested in buying an RS6 in the near future. I will be coming out of a B7 S4. I just would like to know what I should be looking out for when purchasing. Certain kinds of wear and tear... I heard the timing belt needs alot of maintanence. Also how reliable are they? I am fully expecting some things needing extra care, I mean it is a german car =). If you RS6 owners could just point out some things I should be taking into consideration when buying. Also, how good is the nav on these things? There seems to be no center screen? Thats would be a big negative if I couldnt get it with nav.
Anyways so if you RS6 owners could elaborate on my questions I'd appreciate it.

Every time you get in the car put a $50 bill in the ashtray. That will help offset the maintenance costs just a little bit.

Timing belt job every 35K. Suspension goes just as much as any other audi. Hey man, if you have the $$$ to maintain that pig.....DO IT! It is a timeless design, and with the right mods....will beat the shit out of most anything. I will own one when I can get a decent mileage one in the 20's.

nav on those cars are limited to the info screen between your guages. It works descent enough. Arrows and the street name appear giving you directions onscreen and by voice. Try to get a warranty for your car...it will pay for itself.

Re: buying a RS6.. some questions...

The big ticket items that people encounter the most are the timing belt (as mentioned), the front brake maintenance and the oil changes (a lot of oil and you have to swing the sway bar aside to complete the job). The shop manual says to remove the motor to replace the oxygen sensors since the downpipes are in such a tight spot and just like the 2.7T, turbo failure also requires a motor pull.

It's a great car, you just have to have the right kind of spare cash flow to cover things out of pocket unless you have a CPO warranty on it to cover the big stuff. Maintanence items still won't be covered but, it's still better than paying for every last thing that comes up.

If you have the skills & tools to do your own work, you'll save a small fortune over time.

Strangely, RS6 cars are holding onto their values despite the gas prices. I still se some in the $40K range on used car lots.

I dont know who started the rumor of 35k timing belt, but its not true. TB job must the done every 75k miles. You can do it every 35k if you want to. I would get the rs6 because they are very well build cars. yeah shocks fail after some time but most people will run coilovers anyway. Other than that its a great car.

UHHH who started the rumor? Maybe Audi did. Check the maintence manuel. I have done several at 35k services and they suck!!!

Re: buying a RS6.. some questions...

Thanks for the Link DAFT. I'mactually driving to Erie PA this weekend for a baptism. Maybe I will take some time and check this bad boy out. I will say though, I prefer something local to the Chicago area. I have many friends that bought cars on ebay/autotrader/etc, and found hidden prizes(I mean problems) with the car when they got it home.

As far as I know the TB is to be done at 35K. That is what three Audi techs have told me. It is a pain in the ass to do, even compared to a regular 4.2. As mentioned with just a simple oil change these things are intense to operate on. The brakes......My god expensive.

Re: buying a RS6.. some questions...

Ok thanks for the help guys. Also, I am very picky with the colors/options and so forth and have had my eye on a few, but even those have one or another thing that I would perfer to have in another color..... Is there a better site than Autotrader to search for RS6's? Also are the tinted looking tails a aftermarket option? I really like how they look on Daytona Grey.
