Hello.. first post although I have been browsing for some time. I have a newbie question and I apologize in advance for its simplicity. See, I have a B6 S4 and it needs tires. Unfortunately this is the first car I have bought/taken care of alone. It is also the only performance I have ever owned. So my question is this, what information do I need to consider when looking for tires? I do not race, although the occasional spirited joy ride is appreciated. I just need something cheap but safe. I think I need to know things like the load rating and also what the Y,W, and H ratings are.. I know I know.. Sorry I am new and have no guidance.

    Please be nice.

Here is a ton of info:

The folks at www.tirerack.com are very cool and their prices are decent.

If you search the forum, this subject has been discussed many times.

    1. Unfortunately, no tires for the S4 are going to be "cheap".

    2. If you go with "cheap" tires, you will really compromise the performance capabilities of your car in terms of accelleration, grip, handling and braking.

    3. Go to www.tirerack.com and use their many features to select your tire. Price is also likely unbeatable.

    Welcome to the forum…

    Smack

for the love of god buy a good set of tires…cost should not be an issue, you are going to end up like all those riced up civics on the side of the freeway with blown tires I see every day on the way to work, because they cheaped out and bought $80 Nankang tires….

Tip…you can tell a lot about the built quality of a tire by looking at the load rating…try to get the highest load ratting you can.
Random example my altima has Goodyear eagle F1 GS-D3 that have a load ratting of 1389lb…on a car that weights 2800lb I can run the car on two tires…good tires don’t come cheap…how about $198 a corner for a small 225/40/18 tire…while my rims are only $175 a corner…
B6 S4 Winter Beast: Supercharger, Carbonio-hybrid Intake, Fast Intentions DP & CB, CF Vented Hood. Susp:PSS9 Coilovers, Hotchkis F&R sway bars, Brakes: B7 RS4 Front (w/LW rings) & rear BRK, SS lines. Snow tires.
Daily Driver: BMW F15 X5 M50d clone, DUDMD tune, water/methanol injection, 38mpg highway

don't skimp. the cost per mile of a decent tire over a cheap tire is pennies.

General Exclaim UHP: 110 or less per tire, any size up to 19, 20 is like 15-20 more.
ZR rated tire: 1897 lbs load rating.

Minimal tire noise, excellent wear if rotated regularly. No vibrations, awesome tire for the money.

This is my second set of generals and I had 30k on my first set of 19's on my b6 a4.. Never had a problem, handled well in wet weather also
