    Question on iPod Integration

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am purchasing a new "08 RS4 tomorrow and it came from the factory with the cd changer in the glovebox. I told them I wanted the iPod instead and obviously since it is at the end of the production run they cannot order one. They called today and told me that they can go one of two routes: have an aftermarket shop install a fm modulator and play the ipod through the radio and playlists will not appear on the screen OR do it with Audi parts and it will appear on screen but it will cost in upwards of $1000.

Is any of this true? Does anyone know the correct way for it to be done in order to display playlists on the nav screen? Is the price outrageous? Please help out a soon to be fellow RS4 buddy. Any info on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: Question on iPod Integration

AFTERMARKET is much better in my opinion. It cost a lot less and seemed to be easier.

Do not use an FM modulator. They suck. Best option is to go after market and get a different head unit - something like the Pioneer AVIC series. I have one and it works perfect. It has the complete Ipod UI (user interface) and is all activated via the units touch screen. All that and you get NAV, BT for your phone, rear camera, XM or Sirius and much more. Well worth it IMHO.

that is your opinion. personally, i think the aftermarket units look like poop in our cars. the rns-e + a denison icelink = win

You're absolutely right, it is my opinion which I hold in high regard since it's in MY car. BTW, every single person who's ever seen it has commented that they thought it was factory. Just giving the guy something to think about.

    Re: Question on iPod Integration

You can get the Audi iPod adapter here:

    http://www.audipartsdepot.com

    Part number is 8E0051444

It's only $150.00 and change. It should be a plug and play install, or any competent stereo shop can install it for less than $850.00. Any way you look at it, it's not going to cost over $1000.00 like the dealer told you.

EDIT: After some more research, you might need this one for your RS4: 8E0857925D 6PS. It's about $250.00, but still shouldn't cost more than $1000.00 installed.

But the Audi iPod adapter doesn't show album names or track names. It can't - it connects via only the CD changer interface which doesn't support text.

If you want you iPod "reduced" to 6CDs (the first 5 playlists are CD1..5 and CD6 is the whole contents of your iPod) then go the OE route. Otherwise go Dension.

Oops, even though I thought that would be my first choice it looks like the Audi adapter = the suck. So get the Denison :)

    Re: Question on iPod Integration

So does any system out there capable of displaying playlist/song titles? Also, the USA dension site says they are no longer selling in the USA. So if I did want to purchase it where should I go? Does anyone sell anything that doesn't have a sloppy wire and a loose ipoad in the glovebox. I guess I am looking for a concealed housing (not a dash cradle) and sort of fixed in place. Any suggestions? Thanks everyone for your help.

    Re: Question on iPod Integration

If the car has the RSN-E, don't they still have the ability to take 2 SD cards?

You'd have to have .mp3 format files and do a little work to load them up and the playlists. I have an RSN-E with 6Gb of storage. Not huge, but not terrible either and $100 tops.

I went back and forth about having my ipod in my car. Honestly, don't waste your money. If you want to keep the RNS-E and have the track names and playlists and all that info, use the SD cards.

The Audi iPod interface only displays "Track 00 through Track 99" you get 5 of those plus a sixth. So you get 500 songs + the entire ipod as the sixth disc. But you don't see any names at all.

Jester7677 said it best. That is your best bet. I use those and sometimes I burn CDs and take them into the car. Blank CDs cost a whole 10 cents now, right? Less than that prolly. Don't get rid of your CD changer. There may be a day you get a CD and want to play it...oops...gotta go home and put it on the iPod first...but DAMN! I wanna hear that song NOW! Who knows...

Get yourself 2 4GB SD cards. DO NOT GET HIGH CAPACITY SD. SDHC cards do not work with the RNS-E.

    Buy 2 of these:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820163159

If you're on a Mac, I recommend a program called 'SyncTunes' It will move your desired playlists over to the SD card. All you need is a USB card reader, and your set. The RNS-E will only see a little over 400 items. So you'll probably only use up 3GB of each card.

Oh yeah, then there's the whole thing of mp3 format. You'll have to convert any music with DRM back to mp3. That may be a time intensive process. But this is by far your cheapest option. Getting the songs titles, playlists, and info to appear on the RNS-E screen with around 6GB of music.

Or, you could do all this madness, LOL!:

i thought about it too, but opted for the icelink. you can pick up aa used icelink for ~$75.

i hae an iphone, and my latest music is always synced to it. i use the two SD slots to hold albums i like, or playlists i want to rock when i'm just going from point a-b and don't want to plug the phone in. if it's a longer trip, the iphone is always plugged in.

Factory Ipod intergration on 2008 Audi A4

My 2008 A4 car with a factory ipod kit 8E0 857 925D. It worked great with my old Ipod classic. Would charge it as well. The ipod broke on me and bought a 3rd generation Ipod touch. It works the same, but it will not charge the ipod. The ipod classic would charge and display the Audi logo on screen when it was plugged in.

    Has anyone any helpful feedback?

    Thank you!

haha doubt that most of these guys even still own their cars as this was a post from just over 6 years ago. When I was still using an iPod, I was looking at the Dension kit, which seemed to be the best option. Now that I just use Spotify on my phone, the audio jack adaptor works fine for me.

IIRC Apple changed the charging connections and voltage, hence why it doesn't charge the newer iPod.
